Press Release: METAMAN BINTAN LURES IN TRIATHLETES WITH ITS BEAUTIFUL COURSE AND OVER US$130,000 PRIZE PURSE

THE FAMED IRON DISTANCE TRIATHLON RETURNS FOR A THIRD SEASON THIS AUGUST WITH UPGRADES

28 May, 2014 (Singapore) – Indonesia’s most loved Full and Half iron distance triathlon returns for its third season, with the organisers targeting its highest number of participants yet. Held over three-days, Saturday, 23 August through to Monday, 25 August, the main race day will take place on Sunday, 24 August, amongst the stunning backdrop of lush jungle and crystal clear waters of the Indonesian resort island of Bintan – a 45 minute ferry ride from Singapore. Each year Metaman Bintan attracts some of the world’s best professional triathletes such as Australia’s Olympian Courtney Atkinson and Switzerland’s iron distance legend Caroline Steffen, making it one of the top competitions on the calendar.

Organised by MetaSport, a leading sports management company in Asia with its head office in Singapore, MetaMan Bintan will provide endurance athletes with a unique race that will test their mettle in the competitive swim, bike, run to the finish line. The favourite remains the MetaMan Half consisting of 1.9km swim – 90km bike – 21.1km run. The race returns with its Full Category and an all New Metaman Blitz as well.

Nathalie Marquet, Managing Director, MetaSport said, “Triathlons for any new comer can be intimidating. We want to encourage more enthusiasts to take up challenging endurance races and with the MetaMan Blitz category; it still allows participants to have a taste of the iron distance triathlons without the physical demand. However, our core events, the MetaMan Full and MetaMan Half remains a strong draw and we are encouraged by the response to these categories each year”.

New Category for the Non-Competitive
After a successful test event last year, the MetaMan Blitz is back. A perfect race for the non-competitive:

MetaMan Blitz
The Blitz will comprise of a 1.2km swim – 55km bike – 7km run. Created to encourage wider participation of endurance races, the MetaMan Blitz is an ideal category for first timers who want to try their hands at such demanding races without having to commit to grueling distances. The Blitz is also a chance for non-competitive participants to truly enjoy the nature of such events.

The two favourite categories returning are:
MetaMan Full – 3.8km swim – 180km bike – 42.2km run
MetaMan Half – 1.9km swim – 90km bike – 21.1km run

Spectacular Setting for a World-Class Race
Taking place in the northern part of Bintan, participants will set off from the sandy beaches of Nirwana Gardens Resort Hotel, before diving into the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea. After triumphing over the East-West currents, the swim route will bring them back to the island of Bintan where they will begin their bike route, cycling through lush jungle, alongside the calm blue sea and stunning beaches. With rolling hills as part of the terrain, the bike route will be the ultimate test.

The end of the bike route will signal what most professionals deem as the true start to the race, the marathon. The marathon route will take participants through the famed, Wakatobi Jungle Track. The jungle bed is soft making it ideal for such a challenging race, which is bordered with dense trees, providing a shady respite through the last stage of the race. The final stretch is the slight incline along the Mayang Sari Beach Resort, where participants will take on six, 7km laps, through the resort’s grounds, rallied by the support and energetic cheer from the spectators and organising team.

Deeper and More Attractive Prize Purse
With a total price purse of S$134,000, the top prize for both men and women pros of the MetaMan Full will be US$30,000. There will be prizes for the top 6 men and women of the MetaMan Full. Courtney Atkinson, former Australian Olympian and professional triathlete, and Caroline Steffen, former Ironman European Champion and Vice-World Champion, clinched top spots in their respective categories last year.

“We are very pleased to support CARIF in its efforts to make a difference in the fight against cancer not only in Malaysia but also at the global level,” said Josephine Tan, Chairman of the Terry Fox Run KL (TFRKL) organising committee

“No donation or contribution is too small or trivial, and we hope that more corporations and businesses will support the run. Most importantly, we hope more Malaysians will participate in 2014 to help increase awareness and contribute to cancer research” .

After the cheque presentation ceremony, HE Judith St George, corporate supporters and the volunteers were given a tour of the CARIF facility with an introduction to the cancer research programmes conducted by CARIF. “Funds from the Terry Fox Run have been used for research to identify new therapeutics for the treatment of oral cancer, the continued provision of BRCA genetic testing and counselling for breast cancer patients ,research into the discovery of new breast cancer loci and to look for pathway-specific anti-cancer compounds from our natural resources,” said Professor Dr Teo.

“CARIF is privileged to be working with - Terry Fox Run in support of cancer research - in Malaysia. On behalf of CARIF, I would like to thank the Terry Fox Run organising committee and all of the volunteers and participants of TFR KL, for their invaluable support and their dedication to carrying on the Terry Fox vision to seek a cure for cancer,” she added.

The Terry Fox Run, named after the young man who inspired these events, has been held in KL for the last 17 years and has attracted thousands of Malaysians from all walks of life. The Terry Fox Run KL has raised close to RM 2 million since 2003. Globally, since 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than RM 1.9 billion, and attracts over 2 million runners each year, in aid of cancer research around the world. Last year’s run in Kuala Lumpur attracted an estimated total of more than 7,000 participants.

Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His right leg was amputated above the knee. Whilst in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients, especially the children, that he resolved to run across Canada (a distance of 8,500 kilometres) to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the “Marathon of Hope”. He ran a marathon (42 kilometres) a day for 143 consecutive days - a total distance of 5,373 kilometres. Terry was forced to abandon his run as the cancer spread to his lungs and died at the age of 21. Before he died, he knew that a fund-raising event would be held each year, with the same objectives as the Marathon of Hope - to help find a cure for cancer.

Exclusive: Interview with AirAsia X’s CEO Azran Osman-Rani on Gold Coast Airport Marathon

Briefly tell us about the Kuala Lumpur -> Gold Coast Route by AirAsia X.
The Kuala Lumpur-Gold Coast route has a very special significance for AirAsia X. It was our very first route that we launched on 2 November 2007. The first long-haul, LCC flight. At that time when we first started, we faced many challenges – either we were not given Government approvals to fly to many of the cities we wanted to fly (which we have subsequently overcome), or the airports in those cities were not interested in AirAsia X because at that time, long-haul LCCs were an unknown, unproven model.

We met Gold Coast who were very similar to us. They are a small airport that had big growth ambitions. They wanted to find an airline that would be the first connection for them to Asia (before us, their only international flights were to New Zealand). They believed in the simple, low-cost business model. And, they were hungry and ready to invest.

Today, that mutual partnership has blossomed. We have carried over 1 million passengers on this route alone, and we’ve put Gold Coast on the ‘must-see’ map for many Asian tourists, as well as open up Malaysia and Asia to Australians residing in Southeast Queensland.

You have run a few times in Gold Coast Airport Marathon. Tell us a little bit about this marathon.
The Gold Coast Marathon is one of the premier marathons in Australia. Its known as a ‘fast’ ‘personal-best’ course because of the ideal running conditions: flat course, cool temperatures, nice ocean breeze, and very cheerful atmosphere with many spectators along the course and music/entertainment. Many Asian runners have used the race to try to qualify for the Olympics. AirAsia have sponsored Cambodia’s national marathoner, Hem Bunting and Singapore’s Mok Yin Ren as they both try to get under the 2:18 time to qualify for the Olympics.

When did you run GCAM?
I ran GCAM from 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. 2009 was particularly memorable because GCAM was my first-ever full 42km marathon and I finished in 5:13. AirAsia have been sending our running team every year since 2009 as we are big supporters of the race.

How did you do?
My best 42km time there was 4:49 and 21km at 1:53.
(Personal Best was 3:40 at Osaka in 2012).

What are the memorable (funny, proud) moments in running the Gold Coast marathon?
Can’t beat the feeling of crossing that 42km finish line for the very first time. You always remember your very first completed marathon!

What are the differences between running in Malaysia and Gold Coast?
Gold Coast’s temperate climate and Ocean breeze in July makes for a much more pleasant running experience compared to Malaysia. I would estimate the difference in timing for an average 4-5 hour runner can be as much as 20-30 minutes.

What are the top three reasons a runner should run the GCAM?
1. Personal-Best quality running course
2. Great family destination with many tourist activities
3. Easy and convenient access with direct AirAsia X flights!

What are the tips for first time runner in GCAM?
1. Bring gloves as hands can get cold early in the morning
2. I also use an old long-sleeve t-shirt at the start of the race to stay warm, and discard it after a few kms running once the body heat picks up.
3. No real need to carry water or food because I find there’s enough along the race course. Stop for a quick break (or at least a walk break) at every stop
4. Find a hotel that provides shuttles to the race start venue

How do you reward yourself after GCAM?
Soaking tired legs in the cold salty ocean water – purportedly helps recovery!

What are the must see places and must do things when you are in GC?
Depends on personal preferences. If you bring family, most people like to go to the theme parks or just hang out at the beautiful beaches. My personal favourite is to see the Glow Worm caves at Tamborine Mountain. A very unique natural spectacle.
One year, the AirAsia running team went whale watching after the run, because July is whale season. Pretty fun catching a glimpse of the magnificent beasts out in the open ocean.

Are you going to run GCAM this year?
I’m afraid not this year as it falls during fasting month.

From L to R :Mr. Jason Smith, Director of Marketing, South East Asia and Oceania, Sony Mobile Communications, Ms. Amnah Ajmal, Head of Retail and Personal Banking, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia, Mr. Lai Shu Wei, Head of Brand and Marketing, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia and Mr. Louis Song, Country Manager, WeChat Malaysia and Singapore.

Partnership to allow the Bank to offer promotions in conjunction with SCKLM

Petaling Jaya, 8 May 2014 – Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia (Standard Chartered) WeChat and Sony Mobile are working together to introduce innovative products and services in conjunction with the biggest running event in the country, Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM), to promote health and wellness.

This partnership reflects a strong, shared objective to reach out to the Gen-Y demographic. The collaboration will provide the opportunity to leverage on social media and to use a different approach to reach and engage customers.

The historical significance of this collaboration lies in the fact that Standard Chartered has become the first bank to work with one of the leading social messaging providers, WeChat, at the same time, the two parties will work with Sony Mobile to exclusively launch the global smartphone player’s SmartBand.

“Traditionally, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon has always been a corporate sponsorship event where Standard Chartered is the title sponsor and we promote our branding through the Race. This year, we are leveraging on the marathon to continue our commitment to serve our customers through innovative products and solutions.

“In order to do this, we have partnered with a social messaging provider, WeChat and via our official account – Standard Chartered MY to provide live updates of the marathon to our customers whilst driving our Standard Chartered JustOne Marathon account.

“We are also partnering with Sony Mobile to offer the SmartBand (exclusive to us) to all marathoners at a special price to bank on the health and wellness theme of the marathon,” said Amnah Ajmal, Head of Retail and Personal Banking, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia.

Recognising the huge potential of the marathon, the Bank has launched its JustOne Marathon Bonus Promotion. The first 5,000 new accountholders to sign up for the JustOne account will receive a RM120 discount to purchase the latest Sony SmartBand or Sony Xperia phones. Each successful application will receive the promotion code via SMS and customers can log on to www.sc.com/my/sonywechat to purchase the device.

Customers can further benefit from this promotion by making deposits into their account; the more they save, the higher the interest they will earn. This promotion will run from now till 31 July 2014.

In addition, customers and marathoners can follow the Official Account on WeChat (ID: standardcharteredmy) to receive a RM100 off the retail price for Sony Smartband which currently retails at RM399, and also the latest updates on other promotions and privileges, running tips, running clinics and the latest announcements on the Marathon.

“We are honoured to be the Social Media Partner for Standard Chartered Bank via their Official Account platform on WeChat. Besides receiving the latest content, users can now apply for a Standard Chartered credit card through the Official Account on WeChat. Our team is working closely with valuable content and services partners like Standard Chartered to enrich and enhance our application to WeChat users in Malaysia and we hope that Standard Chartered will continue to further leverage on our platform.”

“Our ultimate objective is to make WeChat more than just an instant communication application, but an all-in-one smart application that can cater for every user’s lifestyle and needs,” said Louis Song, Country Manager of WeChat, Malaysia and Singapore.

“We are honoured to be a part of this exciting partnership, alongside very dynamic partners like Standard Chartered and WeChat. Sony Mobile’s involvement in this partnership effortlessly embodies the Sony ethos by adding colour, fun and entertainment to the user experiences to create a perfect synergy with the health and wellness concept of the marathon,” said Jason Smith, Director of Marketing, South East Asia and Oceania, Sony Mobile Communications.

The Sony SmartBand and Core represent an entirely different proposition from other products in the “wearable” category. The Sony SmartBand is an innovative life logging wrist band that lets you keep track of everything you do. With lifelog, the Sony SmartBand is the perfect companion for the Standard Chartered marathon participant who wants to keep track of their lifestyle in line with their training regime for the marathon. It is discreet and designed to look great with any clothing style. To top it off, this piece of wearable technology is waterproof, allowing users to keep it on no matter what they are doing.

“The Sony SmartBand stands for a holistic life logging experience, diarising communication and entertainment and making that data accessible, useful and enjoyable for users in addition of course to tracking fitness and health,” Smith added.

With participation increasing every year since its inception, last year’s Standard Chartered KL Marathon registered more than 33,800 runners. This year, the organiser, Dirigo Events, is expecting more running enthusiasts to be part of Malaysia’s biggest running event with 35,000 slots opened to the public.

Six years running and with a new tagline, “Confident. Committed. Courageous,” the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 is set to encourage commitment to a healthy lifestyle, enhance people’s confidence, and to celebrate the courage of participants.
