Media Release: Future Dentists Join the Fight Towards A Future Free of the Fear of Cancer

Kuala Lumpur, 15 February 2015 – Future dentists from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Dental Student Association (UKMDENSTA) pledged their support for the Malaysian plan of down staging oral cancer by organizing an Oral Cancer Run aiming to raise awareness of oral cancer and also raise funds for oral cancer research in Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF).

CARIF is a Malaysian independent cancer research organisation that conducts impactful research to make a difference in the prevention of cancer and the survival of cancer patients. “Funds raised from the Run will be channeled to CARIF for oral cancer research to develop better therapies with fewer side effects for the treatment of oral cancer. It is very inspiring that these students are starting early in their career to think about improving oral cancer survival,” quipped Professor Dr Cheong Sok Ching, Head of Oral Cancer Research Team at CARIF.

“It is an honour to be able to give back to our community by supporting such a worthy foundation. We pledge to hold this cause close to our hearts as we want to do our part in fighting the disease. In the future, we plan to organize this event during mouth cancer awareness month to make it sustainable and to strengthen collaboration with Ministry of Health, Oral Cancer Research and Coordinating Centre University of Malaya (OCRCC UM) and other dental colleagues. We would also like to take this opportunity to introduce UKMDENSTA to the public as we strongly believe that we need to nurture these future dentists who will continue to make a difference in the near future,” said Dr Atika Ashar, UKM Dental lecturer and Advisor for the UKMDENSTA.

The Run is correspondingly in line with the Malaysian National Oral Health Plan where one of the seven key goals is to have 30% of oral cancers detected at an early stage sin year 2020 – we are currently detecting 70% of oral cancers at late disease stages. To achieve this, raising awareness is the first step and in relation to that, the annual National Mouth Cancer Awareness Week Walkathon organized by the National Oral Cancer Initiatives (NOCI) co- chaired by Dr Khairiyah Abd. Muttalib (Principal Director, Oral Health Division, Ministry of Health) and Professor Rosnah Mohd Zain (Director, OCRCC UM) later this year will be continuing the same effort to down stage oral cancer.

“I am grateful that we are able to contribute to the government’s efforts in down staging oral cancer. The student committee at UKMDENSTA is driven to continue coordinating this Run annually, with the hope to increase our CARIF donation year on year as we share the charity’s vision for a future free of the fear of cancer,” said Siti Masyitah Solehah Bt Abdul Sabeth, Programme Director of the Oral Cancer Run, UKMDENSTA.

Media Release: Impossibly Light and Incredibly Strong Marries Soft and Responsive: The Nike Flyknit Lunar 3

Impossibly Light and Incredibly Strong Marries Soft and Responsive: The Nike Flyknit Lunar 3

When it comes to running shoes, often less is more. The Nike Flyknit Lunar 3 combines the newest iteration in Nike Flyknit innovation with a reformulated Nike Lunarlon midsole, giving the runner a ride that is lighter, more cushioned and more responsive. Whether it’s her first run, a 5K race or marathon, this shoe equips the runner with everything she needs – and nothing more.

From heel to toe, the Nike Flyknit Lunar 3 has runners totally covered. The Nike Flyknit Lunar 3 is the third generation of what has been wowing elite and everyday runners alike for years. The latest improvements include an evolved Flyknit upper; a contoured, lockdown fit; a super-soft ride from a reformulated Lunarlon midsole; and an anatomical inspired solid rubber outsole delivering runners a fluid, soft and responsive ride.

What’s more, all these functions perfectly work together, as the Flyknit upper seamlessly integrates high breathability, stretch and support. The Flyknit Lunar 3 construction is an evolution in design with a tighter knit structure in the heel for support and a looser, more open knit structure in the forefoot. The result: increased breathability and stretch structure placed specifically where it is needed.

Flyknit innovation enables designers to micro-engineer every stitch and eliminates the need to use multiple materials in the uppers of traditional sports footwear manufacturing. This means a lighter, virtually seamless upper for the runner and reduced waste in manufacturing. Ultimately, she’ll get a lightweight supportive fit that is designed to move with her no matter how fast or how far she’s running.

The contoured fit in the new shoe includes an integrated tongue that stays in place while she moves and a plush collar for comfort throughout her stride. For even more support, Flywire cables are integrated within the Flyknit to cradle the foot and provide a personalized lockdown fit. The result is a formfitting upper with zero distractions so light that she’ll barely know it’s there.

“The Flyknit Lunar 3 combines what runners love about the Flyknit Lunar shoe with evolutions of two of our best innovations and technologies together,” says Rob Williams, Senior Design Director of Running Footwear. “We listened to what athletes loved about the shoe and evolved the Flyknit design to deliver more of the superiour strength and snug support on top of an even lighter Lunarlon ride.”

A reformulated Lunarlon midsole delivers a lighter, more responsive and supportive ride from the cushioning runners have grown to love and expect from Lunarlon. On the outsole, pressure map data informed a pattern that more closely matches how the foot moves as it strides. Designers applied these insights with a solid rubber outsole that provides a piston effect for a smooth transition from heel strike through toe-off. The result is a lightweight neutral shoe with an even more natural stride and fluid ride.

Debuting in time to help runners achieve their New Year’s resolutions – whether pushing for another mile or attempting a first-ever marathon – the Nike Flyknit Lunar 3 delivers runners the ultimate in performance-plus-style.

“The Nike Flyknit Lunar 3 is the formula for the perfect run with an ultra-light supportive fit combined with a soft, responsive Lunarlon cushioning that gives her a plush feel through her run,” Williams continues.

The Nike Flyknit Lunar 3 will be available beginning February 15, 2015, on nike.com. It will be offered in 12 colors for men and women beginning March 5, 2015, in retailers around the world.

Media Release: adidas Unveils Ultra BOOST, the Greatest Running Shoe Ever

Kuala Lumpur (12 February, 2015) – The Energy Running revolution has taken a bold new step as adidas unveiled the greatest running shoe ever, Ultra BOOST. adidas developed Ultra BOOST using ARAMIS’ 3D shape and surface measurement to provide a fully adaptable running experience. The ARAMIS system is also used by top engineering institutions like NASA, Boeing and BMW to measure crash tests, vibration analysis and durability studies. Ultra BOOST intuitively adjusts to a runner’s stride delivering the unrivalled Energy Return of BOOST™, superior support and adaptive comfort over hundreds of kilometres, in virtually any environment.

UNRIVALLED ENERGY RETURN
Ultra BOOST features 20 percent more* BOOST cushioning material, the highest Energy Return cushioning in the running industry, and has eliminated the traditional EVA midsole for more direct contact to provide the ultimate expression of BOOST. Made of thousands of unique energy capsules, BOOST delivers a consistent performance over hundreds of kilometres, in virtually any condition.

ADAPTIVE COMFORT
To complement the unrivalled Energy Return of BOOST, Ultra BOOST features an innovative update to adidas’ PRIMEKNIT technology built to reach new heights of comfort, support and style.

A runner’s foot can remarkably expand up to 10 mm or more in width while running. When restrained, this expansion can cause severe discomfort, friction and the leading injury in running, blisters. Unlike other leading knit technologies the innovative PRIMKENIT pattern of Ultra BOOST provides comfortable support in less expansive areas of the foot and adaptive stretch where it’s needed to deliver maximum comfort.

“Each technology featured in Ultra BOOST was built to complement each other providing energized adaptability through a customized fit, look and feel,” said Ben Herath, Vice President of Design for adidas running. “While we’ve taken innovation to the next level, the sleek silhouette of Ultra BOOST is built to look as good as it performs.”

ENERGY HARNESSED
One of the most advanced features of Ultra BOOST is the Stretch Web outsole that adapts and stretches to your foot strike and movement. The perforated elastic design harnesses and maximizes the Energy of BOOST without restricting any of its qualities. The unique appearance of the Stretch Web outsole is the perfect look to complement the eye-catching Energy capsules of BOOST.

SUPERIOR SUPPORT
Ultra BOOST also features an entirely new heel construction that frees the natural movement of the Achilles tendon. A carefully tuned external heel counter comfortably cradles the foot and adapts to the high extension of the Achilles. A new featherweight sock liner adapts to the runner’s natural foot form, for a customized fit and feel.

Ultra BOOST also boasts a new dual-density TORSION® SYSTEM, embedded into the shoe’s base. This allows more independent movement between heel and forefoot for superior stability and a smooth, more controlled run.

Your greatest run ever awaits. adidas Ultra BOOST will be available at adidas Sports Performance stores on 25th February 2015 at the retail price of RM650.

Media Release: Usain Bolt And PUMA ‘Ignite’ New York City

Runners Harness Energy in Times Square to Launch New PUMA IGNITE Running Shoe

New York City, USA (13 February 2015) – Usain Bolt was at the heart of a spectacular stunt in New York on Tuesday to launch PUMA IGNITE, a running shoe that provides maximum energy return. In the energy hub of the city that never sleeps, runners powered away on treadmills in Times Square throughout the day with the energy from their IGNITE shoes being collected and stored. When the threshold reached 100%, the World’s Fastest Man rose up in a theater of light, smoke and fire.

This wasn’t the first time Usain Bolt has made a grand entrance in New York. In 2008 he broke the 100m World Record for the first time and set upon a stunning track and field career that has seen five World Records, and 14 Major Championship Gold Medals. The World’s Fastest Man warms up and trains in PUMA IGNITE, to maximise his energy output and maximize his training impact.

Usain Bolt said, “I’ve always enjoyed a good entrance, and this one was epic. People were running for hours on end in really cold weather, we were watching the energy meter rise and when it hit the top it’s fair to say there were fireworks. IGNITE is a great a running shoe, along with PUMA spikes, I spend a lot of time training in this shoe as well and it really helps to sustain my energy levels. I love IGNITE for that.”

“I’m excited to be back here in New York with PUMA,” continued Usain. “I have special memories of this city - I always have a great time whenever I’m here, whether I’m competing or otherwise. It’s always good to back.”

Following this launch, PUMA and Usain Bolt have challenged runners in ten cities around the World to follow suit, through regional epic running events. The campaign IGNITE YOUR CITY will travel to Tokyo, Japan next week - with other renowned cities to follow.

PUMA IGNITE has been nine years in development, and features an innovative foam technology that makes it PUMA’s most responsive running shoe. IGNITE Foam is a proprietary foam that provides high-energy return, comfort and optimal durability.

Strategically placed in the heel of the shoe is ForEverFoam, which is entirely new to the industry. This ForEverFoam compound is what gives the shoe maximum durability.

Media Release: Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run 2015 To Debut In Malaysia, A Unique Two--City Event

Director and CEO of Great Eastern Life, Dato Koh Yaw Hui (2nd from left); President of The Heart Foundation of Malaysia (YJM), YABhg Tun Ahmad Mohd Sarji (centre) and other VIPs from Great Eastern Life and YJM at the official launch of the Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run 2015!

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 9 January 2015 – Heart Foundation of Malaysia (Yayasan Jantung Malaysia) today announced its collaboration with Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad for the inaugural Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run this year in Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

YABhg Tun Ahmad Mohd Sarji Bin Abdul Hamid, President, Heart Foundation of Malaysia said, “The Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run is a unique event that will be held in two cities. We believe that fitness should be enjoyed and that the twin benefits of enhanced fitness levels and general well-being will help to create a holistically improved quality of life for all our participants.”

According to Director and Chief Executive Officer of Great Eastern Life, Dato Koh Yaw Hui, the collaboration is a key part of Great Eastern Life’s Live Great Programme, the first integrated health and wellness programme by an insurance company in the region that is designed to assist people in achieving their health goals.

“The Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run is conceptualised to promote health and improve the level of general happiness among Malaysians. We believe these two components are important to foster physical and emotional wellness to create a holistic lifestyle. A healthy heart makes a happy man!” Dato Koh said.

“It is our brand promise as a LIFE Company to inspire Malaysians to turn their health intentions into actions so that they can live healthier, better and longer not only for themselves but also for their loved ones. Great Eastern Life wants to highlight the importance of keeping a balanced lifestyle through health and wellness initiatives.

Held over two weekends in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, the Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run is an international class event featuring a 12km timed race and a 5km fun walk catering to all ages and fitness levels. The Penang leg will take place in the centre of George Town at Padang Kota Lama on the 19 April 2015 whilst the event in Kuala Lumpur will take place in Merdeka Square on the 24 May 2015.

Early bird registrations start at RM45. Included in that is a RM5 donation to the Heart Foundation as well as a kit for participants in the 5km race containing a wide range of items including a t-shirt, a pair of sunglasses, stickers, powder packs, individualised bibs, face masks, fake tattoos and a snack pack.

“The importance of an event like this cannot be stressed enough. Heart disease and stroke related deaths have become the number one killer in Malaysia, already causing almost twice as many deaths as cancer and accounting for over 30% of all medically reported deaths in the country.

In many cases these could have been avoided with a change in lifestyle – eating more healthily and daily exercise – and we hope that Malaysians will enjoy these events and see that exercise can be fun. Bring your parents, your grandparents and your children and have fun as a family,” said Ahmad Sarji.

The Kuala Lumpur event will be combined with the existing 12km Great Eastern Live Great Run that has been organised over the past four years by Great Eastern Life Assurance.

“Every year, we set a theme into the run – last year’s was “Superheroes” - to demonstrate that running can be fun, enjoyable and be made an activity that fosters quality time with family and friends. By combining it and growing it with the Heart Foundation this year, we will be able to reach out to a larger audience in exciting new ways,” added Dato Koh.

“As the main presenter of the event, we believe that the Great Eastern Colour My Heart Run will offer tremendous benefits and excitement as participants share unforgettable ‘Live Great Moments’ with their loved ones. We want to be part of their health and wellness journey as they continue to make little healthy changes in life, which I am sure, will bear fruit if done consistently,” he continued.

The 12km course in Kuala Lumpur will be organised from the start and finish point in Merdeka Square. Both Penang and Kuala Lumpur’s 5km Fun Run courses focus on an experiential fast walk environment. Here, participants will travel at their own pace and pass through specifically designed “colour fun” stations.

These stations will feature colour tents where participants will be showered with coloured powders, enjoy a variety of music selections and a host of other surprise activities. Both locations will also have a post event carnival where free medical check-ups, interactive games, music and entertainment will be provided for all.

“It is our intention to ensure that the events are operated at the highest international standards and provide an unbeatable experience for the participating public,” stated Datuk Dr. Sambhi, Chairman of the Heart Foundation of Malaysia. “The event’s selection of venues, routes, accessibility, delivery of the offerings to the runners and post-event festivities have all have been designed to set the event apart.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, OCBC Bank and Permanis for their support for the event” he concluded.

Media Release: Runners Zoom At Nike Malaysia's First 21K We Run Kuala Lumpur Race

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 FEBRUARY 2015 – A field of 8,000 athletes raced toward their personal bests at Nike’s We Run Kuala Lumpur 21K. For the first time, the race featured a 21K distance, making it one of three cities to host a half-marathon distance in the global Nike We Run Race Series, which aims to inspire athletes to push themselves beyond their limits and unleash their potential.

“Running has long been a popular sport in Malaysia, and we recognize that runners were looking for new challenges, to go faster, farther and better,” says Robin Kok, Country Marketing Manager of Nike Malaysia. “The Nike We Run Kuala Lumpur 21K enabled runners to do just that, and we are ecstatic to see the overwhelming support and participation of the runners from the time they registered, to training with us and completing their race today.”

The course, which routed through Malaysia’s most historical points including Stadium Merdeka, was designed to allow runners to pick up their pace as they rack up the distance. At the 13K mark, halfway through the race, runners could rev up their speed on an eight-kilometer stretch of unhindered highway.

“Many distance runners forget about the need for running fast but to improve as an athlete, you need both strength and pace,” said Jean-Pierre Lautrédoux, a running coach based in Kuala Lumpur.

Registered participants of We Run KL 21K also experienced training sessions with Lautrédoux, and Shaharudin Hashim, Malaysia’s fastest marathoner, over the course of five months leading up to race day. This included an elevated training run held at Sepang International Circuit where runners underwent coaching specific for gaining speed in their runs.

“Reebok believes that by pushing ourselves to the brink and testing our limitations, we have the power to transform ourselves not only physically but also mentally and socially”, said Matt O’Toole, Reebok Brand President. “By adopting such a lifestyle, you find yourself in a community of people, joined together by a common purpose – to be better versions of themselves. We’re confident that when we push ourselves, we not only transform our bodies, we transform our entire lives.”

The brand film titled “Freak Show”, available at www.reebok.com/bemorehuman acknowledges that tough fitness is a lifestyle not always understood. Its methods are intense, demanding and require real commitment. “Freak Show” is a celebration of those who have chosen to be more than they thought they could be through fitness. It is a challenge to those yet to be converted to Be More Human.

Courageous and cinematic, “Freak Show” is a story with captivating intensity that showcases everyday athletes embodying what it truly means to “Be More Human” as they meet and tackle different fitness challenges transforming them to be better leaders, better parents and more capable humans. Directed by AG Rojas in partnership with Venables Bell & Partners, the 60 second TV spot juxtaposes the merits of tough fitness and how it benefits humans in their everyday lives – this includes a young mother crushing a new workout routine and how a firefighter uses the mental toughness gained from a night trail run in his demanding day job.

Yan Martin, Vice President of Global Brand Communications at Reebok, says, “There’s a new breed of athlete. These are everyday people, and these athletes should also be regarded as role models. For these individuals, the achievement comes from the realization that they are transforming their lives through fitness, and in the process they’re transforming the lives of their communities. We acknowledge and salute these new athletes who challenge themselves daily in search of greater rewards.”

At the heart of the multi-channel campaign is the “Be More Human Experience,” an online destination where fitness enthusiasts can challenge and define what it is to be human. The one-of-a-kind platform, available via desktop, tablet and mobile, features a number of interactive “Be More Human” tools and experiences, including:

THE HUMAN SCORE
The world’s first test that quantifies one’s ‘humanness’ by ranking users against various human attributes specifically social, mental and physical traits – designed to trigger conversation about the choices we make with regard to health and physical activity. Participants complete a short online quiz composed of a number of multiple-choice questions, from which the answers are used to generate a personalized Human Score.

GRAY MATTERS
An interactive 3D visualizer that dynamically shows how various physical activities, from excess sleeping to tackling a demanding obstacle course race, stimulate key nodes of the brain - in particular neurotransmitters (emotion and cognitive action), the cerebellum (smooth mental and physical movement), the corpus striatum (TBC), the hippocampus (memory) and the frontal cortex (executive functioning). As users interact with the visualizer, in-depth research on the relationship between physicality and brain stimulation from Dr. John Ratey, one of the world's foremost authorities on the brain-fitness connection, is revealed.

#BREAKYOURSELFIE
Challenges the notion of what beauty is by encouraging fitness enthusiasts to rebel against the shiny, happy selfie by posting images to the “Be More Human Experience” of themselves at their most depleted, raw, broken post-workout state. The rebellious social campaign will feature Reebok athletes and employees, with outstanding submissions rewarded with a #breakyourselfie photo essay depicting the story of the individual or group of friends.

Not sure if they provide finisher medals but we hope not, so that more money can be channelled to needy instead of giving runners a piece of meaningless decorative metal each.

The unique feature of the run is the Water Balloon Fight towards the end of the run.
