PETALING JAYA, January 5, 2015 – In keeping with the annual New Year’s Eve tradition, thousands of revellers gathered at the Mutiara Damansara Commercial Centre (MDCC), comprising the Curve, eCurve and IPC Shopping Centre, to usher in the new year. The gathering, however, was tinged with emotion as it was dedicated to the country’s flood victims.
In less than 36 hours, MDCC made a last minute change to the programme and turned it into a Flood Relief Project themed ‘Together We Care’ to raise funds and collect much-needed food and basic necessities for those affected by the disaster by working hand-in-hand with MERCY Malaysia and CIMB Foundation.
The site of what was to be the street carnival was transformed into a donation zone with stations set up to receive contributions from the public that started pouring in from early evening.
Response to the call for aid also came from Ikano Retail Asia, Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) and Boustead Holdings Berhad, who collectively contributed RM450,000 for the flood victims. Ikano Retail Asia was represented by Centre Manager of IPC Shopping Centre Evelyn Tan and IKEA Store Manager Gerard Jansen, who presented a cheque of RM150,000 to MERCY Malaysia’s Executive Director, Ahmad Faezal Mohamed.
LTAT Chairman Laksamana (B) Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Anuar Hj Mohd Nor presented a cheque of RM100,000 to a representative of Yayasan Tun Hussein Onn, and another RM100,000 to National Disaster Relief Fund representative and Deputy Secretary of National Security Council of Malaysia, Ogu Salim bin Omar. Boustead Holdings Berhad Chairman, General Tan Sri Dato’ Mohd Ghazali Hj Che Mat (R) and Deputy Chairman/Group Managing Director, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin jointly-presented a cheque of RM100,000 to MERCY Malaysia.
The Charity Concert and first-of-its-kind New Year’s Eve ‘Fund Run’ continued as planned and was dedicated to the flood victims.
Local acts such as Cats in Love which started the night’s performances, The Big Band, solo artist Narmi, UK-born musician Jon Liddell, Anugerah Industri Muzik ‘Best New Artist’ Nominee Kyoto Protocol, critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter OJ Law, An Honest Mistake and electro-pop band Paperplane Pursuit amongst others united those present in music and prayer.
Close to 2,000 runners completed the New Year’s Eve ‘Fund Run’, coming together for a healthy start to 2015 and to show their support for those affected. Finishers took home a medal each to commemorate their achievement, and the top five winners of the competitive categories were also awarded with a trophy, entry tickets to Kidzania as well as cash vouchers from Brooks Sports Wear.
Centre Manager of IPC Shopping Centre, Evelyn Tan, said, “This is definitely one of the most meaningful New Year’s Eve gatherings we have held here at MDCC. The event was a true reflection of unity and the spirit of caring and love for fellow Malaysians who are going through some tough times.”
Jazmi Kamarudin, Centre Manager of the Curve, added, “We are very glad to have been able to turn this event around and do our part to help the flood victims. I think our prayers and all the generous contributions will definitely bring a ray of light to those who were affected.”
“Tonight was a memorable event, and we hope that with the support of Malaysians near and far, the victims can rebuild their lives and enter the new year with hope,” concluded Azizul Hisham Ahmad, Centre Manager of eCurve.
Logistics support for the collection of non-cash items was provided by IKEA and Allied Pickfords Malaysia, with volunteers from RSTC Productions and Pacesetters Athletic Club.
