Plogging in Malaysia: My First Plog @ Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur
Have you heard of plogging? It is the latest workout trend sweeping the world. And it has arrived in Malaysia.
This morning I plog for the very first time in my life. Plogging is a form of excercise said to be originated from Sweden, where the term was first coined.
Plogging comes from the Swediesh phrase "plocka upp" which means to pick up. Well, basically it means picking up trash while you run/ jog.
This morning's Plogging Run was organised by a bunch of my friends under the BD Project, led by ultrarunner, Rudy Irwan.
Our plogging excercise started at the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, a beautiful park located in the city centre. About 20 of us turned up, hoping to get some workout while keeping the city clean.
While the average jogger may just jog past a piece of trash along the sidewalk, roadways and trail, a plogger will make picking it ip a crucial part of his workout routine. In no time, we are breaking out a sweat!
You can never be too young to start plogging!
Or too old! Heheh! We are saving the Earth one piece of trash at a time.
Look at the amout of trash we collected. These are collected only half way through our plogging session. We were wrong when we thought that a beautiful and well-maintained park like the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa is quite free from trash.
We picked up food wrappers, paper cups, styrofoam, ciggie packs, plastic bottles, tissue paper was inconsiderately strewn around the park. Among other interesting stuff picked up by the ploggers are condom wrapper, RM1 note and an identity card!
Killing two birds with one stone. Plogging keeps the environment clean while giving us a good workout. You don't need much - your usual running gear, one or two small sized trash bag and a glove (if needed).
Plogging provides a variation of body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching to the main action of running. It's kinda like an interval training.
Even though it was less than 3km of plogging, one bag was not enough. That show how inconsiderate some people are towards the environment, leaving or throwing their rubbish inconsiderately in the park.
The first edition of BD Project Ploggin Run is a success! We picked up a total of 42 bags of trash. Good job, everyone! Thank you RD Project for sponsoring the gloves and trash bags. Thank you Rudy Irwan for spearheading this good cause!
Hope to see more people plog around Malaysia. Do look out for the next Plogging Run on our FB page - www.fb.com/celebrunner. 🤗
