Vegiyathuman, and Sports Toto Fitness representative Norfazli

Kuala Lumpur, 29 December 2014 - As we usher in the new year of 2015, Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd is proud to present the Sports Toto-FTKLAA Cross Country 2015 to all running enthusiasts.

Running events have become the first choice for Malaysians in maintaining a healthy lifestyle as more and more of them enjoy jogging and running as their favourite past time.

As part of the Company’s effort in promoting a healthy lifestyle, Sports Toto has decided to exclusively sponsor a running event to provide an additional platform for the running enthusiasts.

“We are targeting to have 3,000 runners taking part in the race and we are glad to have the Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Assocation (FTKLAA), a body which specializes in organizing running events, to help in holding our first running event.

“We notice that running events are very popular nowadays and there is almost one running event on every weekend. Hence we want to do something different and we have decided to hold a cross country instead of an ordinary running event, which we believe will be more challenging and interesting to the runners,” said Sports Toto Communications Manager Giam Say Khoon.

Sports Toto has been an active sponsor and supporting partner of many sporting events which include the KL-Maran Big Walk, Kenny Rogers Chicken Run, Seremban Half Marathon, MBPJ Squash Open Championship, Penang Bridge International Marathon and Run for Your Lives Malaysia etc.

Press Release: Mutiara Damansara Commercial Centre (MDCC) Flood Relief Project on New Year's Eve

PETALING JAYA, December 29, 2014 – As 2014 draws to a close, Malaysians are coming together in a strong show of support and solidarity to help flood victims in one of the country’s worst natural disasters. Mutiara Damansara Commercial Centre (MDCC), comprising the Curve, eCurve and IPC Shopping Centre, has decided to hold an MDCC Flood Relief Project at its New Year’s Eve gathering that involves a Charity Concert and Fund Run on December 31, in collaboration with MERCY Malaysia and CIMB Foundation. There will no longer be a Street Carnival.

Themed ‘Together We Care’, the MDCC Flood Relief Project will raise funds and be a collection point for critical non-cash items, namely drinking water, baby products including liquid milk, diapers, and wet wipes as well as towels, torch lights, batteries, noodles that can be consumed without being cooked, biscuits, chocolates, women’s sanitary napkins, and disposable underwear. Only non-cash items will be received at the event by CIMB Foundation, which will also not accept any non-halal products or second-hand clothing.

All cash donations on the night will be accepted by MERCY Malaysia which has set up its Flood Relief Fund to provide aid to flood victims. Online donations can also be channelled towards MERCY Malaysia through Maybank, CIMB Bank and RHB Bank. For more details on online donations, donors can visit www.mercy.org.my or www.facebook.com/MERCYMalaysia.

The Fund Drive will begin taking donations from 6.00pm onwards. The Charity Concert will take place from 8.00pm onwards but with a more sedate line-up of music to be performed as a dedication to the victims of the flood. Local Malaysian acts from electro-pop band Paperplane Pursuit to musician OJ Law, as well as Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) Best New Artist nominee Kyoto Protocol will join fellow artistes An Honest Mistake, The Big Band and Narmi, to do their part in uniting people in music and prayer and by doing so, aim to raise more funds on the night for those affected.

The MDCC run to be held on New Year’s Eve will also take place as scheduled, with the five categories maintained. Now called the ‘Fund Run’, all participants who have signed up are invited to register at the venue as planned.

Centre Manager of IPC Shopping Centre, Evelyn Tan, explained, “Given the plight of fellow Malaysians, we decided to change our event to one where we can do more to help. Our theme for the MDCC New Year’s Eve gathering was changed from ‘A Celebration of Togetherness’ to ‘Together We Care’ to encourage the public to come together to show the victims that they are not alone.”

Jazmi Kamarudin, Centre Manager of the Curve, said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Everyone who joins us on the night can make a difference, whether it’s through sharing positive emotions, making donations or just being present to show we care.”

“We hope people will make the extra effort to join us, so we can do our collective part for the flood victims and ring in the new year in a meaningful way,” added Azizul Hisham Ahmad, Centre Manager of eCurve.

In a mark of respect, the event organisers have cancelled the fireworks planned for the night.

To accommodate the MDCC Flood Relief Project and New Year’s Eve ‘Fund Run’, the main road between the Curve and IPC, Jalan PJU 7/2, will be temporarily closed from 11pm on December 29, 2014 to 8am on January 1, 2015. Detour signage and traffic police will be available to help redirect traffic on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, the event day. Press Release: Zumbattling AIDS

The Zumba® craze has taken the world – and Malaysia – by storm. Building upon its strong following, the fitness experts at Celebrity Fitness, in collaboration with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, has successfully channeled this phenomenon towards a worthy cause with Zumba WAD!!! (Zumba® With A Difference).

The three-hour event saw the participation of more than 300 people, including celebrities who joined in the festivities to render their support towards the initiative. Spotted amongst participants include Choo Mei Sze, Dennis Gan, Henley Hii, Eizlan Yusof, Sean Lee and many more.

Led by Celebrity Fitness instructors – Sunny Cheong, Deno Au yong and Alex Phang – participants spent their morning sweating it out to the Zumba fitness routine, involving elements of dance and aerobics. Zumba®'s choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. It is believed that approximately 14 million people take weekly Zumba® classes in over 140,000 locations across more than 185 countries!

To participate in the event, Celebrity Fitness members were required to pay a fee of RM40 while a RM50 fee was imposed for non-members. All proceeds, which totaled RM15,000 was channeled to the Malaysian AIDS Foundation to benefit its HIV treatment, care and support programme.

“HIV and AIDS are nothing new. They have been part of our society for a long time. At the same time, nobody wants to talk about it or to have anything to do with it as it is perceived as a sensitive issue. There seems to be a social stigma of sorts when it comes to HIV and AIDS. However, at the same time, the statistics are staggering – from 1986 to 2013, we have recorded over 101,672 cases of HIV, while 16,340 lives have been lost to AIDS related illnesses,” said Mr. Choi KwangHo, Senior Vice President of Celebrity Fitness Malaysia.

“In this regard, the Zumba® WAD event was held with a two-pronged objective. The first was to raise funds to help the Malaysian AIDS Foundation in their quest to eradicate the negative impact of HIV and AIDS. The second objective was also to increase awareness about the disease and discredit the sensitivity and social stigma associated with it,” said Mr. Choi.

In a bid to tackle the objective head-on, 15 people living with HIV were also invited to participate in the event – a bold move by the organisers which was well received by the participants, who could be seen mingling and working out together with them.

“Not only was the event a truly great way to encourage a healthy lifestyle by capitalising on the Zumba® craze, more importantly, it served as an ideal platform to raise awareness on HIV and AIDS and the plight of people who are negatively affected by the epidemic. Meanwhile, proceeds raised at the event will truly go a long way in helping us continue our work to provide lifesaving HIV treatment, care and support services to some of Malaysia’s most underserved communities due to stigma and marginalisation. Therefore, we would like to thank Celebrity Fitness for initiating this event, and encourage more parties to join in the concerted effort because everyone has a responsibility towards the prevention of HIV,” said Jasmin Jalil, Executive Director of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.

Zumba® WAD was made possible by sponsors which included Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC), Capital FM & Red FM, adidas, Koamas Luxury Escapes, Sothy’s , Munchy’s Oak Krunch, SmileLink, Salonpas, Watson’s, L’oreal , GNC, NewUrbanMale, Revive, melissachens, Gardenia and Melvita.

Layering is the key as the weather warms up, with technical fabrics and functional details to help with performance whatever the sport of choice. Meanwhile H&M Sport for kids combines fashion and function with a feeling of fun. It’s all part of the newly expanded H&M Sport range, with the spring 2015 collection available from January 2, 2015 in selected H&M stores worldwide, as well as online.

“Spring is about fresh possibilities at H&M Sport, whether you are mastering your favourite sport or trying something new. Layering is important for the best performance, whether it’s in the gym or out in the wilds,” says Petra Smeds, H&M Sport women’s designer.

“Athleticism, strength and performance are the main inspirations for H&M Sport this spring, with pieces that work for the body no matter the level of skill. Functionality and technical details not only add an advantage, they also look great too,” says Jonas Blom, H&M Sport men’s designer.

RUNNING For women, seamless running tops and running tights have engineered construction for articulation and comfort. Technical zip-ups provide protection from the elements, with reflective trims for safety and a small running rucksack that fits firmly into the back.

For men, windproof zip-up jackets and tights protect from the weather, with technical T-shirts and shorts for when it warms up, or windproof vests for if sudden protection and warmth is needed. All in shades of black and grey with neon yellow and neon orange contrasts.

GYM Sports bras and vests come in vivid colours for women, perfect to mix and match with leggings in a variety of prints or block shades. Mesh is a key detail, especially on a raglan sleeve zip-up jacket, or as a panel for extra breathability on the back of a sports bra.

For men, technical work-out T-shirts are printed with slogans, with long-sleeve Ts as well as running tights for layering warmth, perfect to wear under more relaxed shorts.

OUTDOOR There are functional layers for every situation for women, from sports bras and vests through to warming middle layers, and outerlayers that combine fleece with mesh for both protection and breathability.

For men, wind and waterproof zip-up jackets combine different textures of fleece and give protection where it’s needed. Outdoor pants in hardwearing fabric have large utility pockets, while a body-contoured base layer is quick drying to help the body keep moisture away.

BODY/MIND For women’s body/mind activities, there’s a softer feel to the melange vests and leggings in grey, black or white, with pops of pink and mint.

Press Release: Kenenisa Bekele To Run 2015 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon

Dubai (UAE) 14 December, 2014: Dubai Holding, the investment holding company, has announced that three-time Olympic Champion Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia will take part in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon on January 23, 2015 in his capacity as Ambassador of the Dubai Holding Wellness Programme.

The Dubai debut appearance of one of the greatest long distance athletes of all time will once again turn the spotlight on the world’s richest marathon as the 32 year-old competes in just the third marathon of what is an illustrious career.

Kenenisa is looking forward to progressing at the classic 42.195km distance after winning in Paris in April (course record 2:05:04) and finishing fourth in Chicago in October (2:05:51).

He holds three current world records for 5,000m outdoor, 5,000m indoor and 10,000m outdoor; has been 18 times World Champion and three times Olympic champion and is the first and only athlete to be world indoor and outdoor, world cross country and Olympic champion.

Ahmad Bin Byat, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Holding, said: “Inspiration is essential in all aspects of life, both professional and personal. As part of our Wellness Programme initiatives, we aim to inspire Dubai Holding employees and members of the wider community to adopt an active lifestyle, push themselves and take on a challenge. Kenenisa Bekele is an ideal Ambassador for our Programme as he is constantly pushing his limits further and challenging himself to do better.

“As a Dubai Holding Wellness Programme Ambassador, Kenenisa is helping to promote health and fitness at Dubai Holding, in Dubai and in the wider UAE. The programme, established in 2007 as the first-of–its-kind in the region, raises awareness among nearly 22,000 employees across the Group and the wider community about healthy living and assists them to change and sustain improvements in their lifestyle to reduce health risks and enhance the quality of their life.”

Kenenisa, who made a flying visit to Dubai to accept his ambassadorial role, said he was delighted to be able to compete in the world’s richest marathon.

“I have been following the race for some time now and I know Dubai has a very flat course that produces fast times,” he said. “Of course, it is not east to step up to the marathon distance and set records but I am looking forward to the challenge of lining up in Dubai next month. Hopefully, I can produce a very quick time and my appearance encourages people of all ages in the UAE to join me in my role as an ambassador for the Dubai Holding Wellness Programme.”

Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, the 2015 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon will see runners compete in the full Marathon, the 10km Road Race and the 4km Fun Run.

Around 25,000 runners are expected across the three events with athletes of all ages, abilities and nationalities lining up alongside one of the biggest names in world sport.

Event Director Peter Connerton believes the appearance of Kenenisa Bekele will fire the crowds in the same manner as fellow Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie who competed for three years in Dubai from 2008-2010.

“Like Haile, Kenenisa has made the step up to the marathon distance after winning everything there is to win at both 5,000 and 10,000, indoor, outdoor and cross country,” he said.

“So far he has had a better start to his marathon career than both Haile and Paul Tergat. He has followed our race with interest for a few years now and has been keen to come and take his marathon experience to another level. We are proud he believes Dubai is the right venue for the next stage in what has been an outstanding running career.”

The 2015 race will mark the ninth consecutive year that Dubai Holding supports the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon as part of its Corporate Wellness Programme. The 2014 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon saw around 2,000 employees from the Corporate Office, Jumeirah Group, TECOM Investments, Dubai Properties Group and Emirates International Telecommunications take part in the event and the company has ambitions to once again grow that figure by twenty per cent in 2015.

In line with the Dubai Government’s efforts of supporting healthier living habits, Dubai Holding also sponsors the UAE National prize category, which it introduced in 2010, offering a total of AED86,000 (Euro 18,800) to the three fastest UAE nationals in the men and women’s marathon, 10km and push chair races.

Runners who would like to take part in the 2015 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon or the associated 10km and 4km events should register online only at www.dubaimarathon.org.

Project Good Deeds: Donate Your Old Shoes and Tees to the Needy in the Orang Asli Communities

There are still many people in different parts of our world still walk around barefoot, not by choice but because they lack resources to put shoes on their feet. Project Good Deeds is an initiative by Multi Purpose Insurans Berhad (MPIB) that collects pre-loved sports/running shoes and tee shirts for the Orang Asli community.

This project is preceded by Project Good Deed Shoes, which collected 249 pairs of shoes for 2 Orang Asli settlements.
With the doubling of the beneficiaries to 4 settlements in Project Good Deeds, MPIB hopes the number of donors and collected items would increase.

The launch of Project Good Deeds was held during a special session counting down the 30 days to MPIB Run race day at Pacific Regency Hotel Suites on 12 December 2014.

The project came about following the feedback of the MPIB Runs’ participants, who replaced their shoes regularly for the maintenance of their performance. Project Good Deeds allows its runners to reduce waste and practise reusing by donating their still wearable shoes and tee shirts to the indigenous minority community.

So, gather your old shoes and tees. Donations of shoes and tees can be made at these dates and location:

20 December 2014 - Padang Merbuk Car Park (7am - 10am)
27 - 28 December 2014 - Lot 10 Sports Hub, Lot 10 Shopping Centre (11am - 7pm)
10 January 2015 - Padang Merbuk Car Park (10am - 6pm)
11 January 2015 - Padang Merbuk Car Park (6am - 11am)

NOTE: Please the shoes and tees are in wearable conditions. It is a charity project, not a garbage dump.

You will be given one of these tokens of appreciation after you have done your donation.

The new Onitsuka Tiger brand prides itself on craftsmanship, as with every refined Japanese culture. Now, with a touch of modern Japanese style as well as keeping the minimalistic designs in mind, Onitsuka Tiger has built this store based on the roots of the brand itself, which is “Made in Japan” while keeping it minimalistic & modern. The brand itself has ranges that represents both the roots of true Japanese craftsmanship like the Nippon Made range, Made in Japan line that focuses on craftsmanship, premium quality textures and luxurious materials such as Japanese leather as well as the sports fashion range which what the brand itself is widely known for, a lifestyle brand of Japanese heritage with modern flair. The original Japanese sports fashion brand.

The details of the store might be hard to tell at first but every single materials used in the outlet has been hand-picked to ensure the outcome would be of that came from the land of the rising sun. The façade design is using wooden pattern embossed mortar coated with a paint mixed with “sumi”. “Sumi” is a black ink made mainly of soot that has traditionally used in Japanese painting and calligraphy. The wood used for the wooden pattern is larch veneer also known as “Tiger Plywood” which also visually symbolizes “Onitsuka Tiger”. The material created by this special technique truly shows and symbolizes “Craftsmanship” which is valued in the Japanese culture.

Onitsuka Tiger is one of the oldest running shoes brands in Asia, predecessors to Asics and even Nike Cortez.

In 1949, Kihachiro Onitsuka established Onitsuka Tiger, the forerunner of ASICS. The brand began with a commitment to promoting youth health, and since then, the Tiger stripes have become synonymous with one of the most world-renowned athletic brands.

The legend lives on today in the fusion of Japanese heritage and modern flair. With designs ranging from updated classic silhouettes to refreshing new styles and collaborations with like-minded artists and cultural connoisseurs, the spirit of Japan resonates in each new collection of Onitsuka Tiger shoes, apparel and accessories.

Following the success for its first store in Kuala Lumpur opened 2012 at Pavilion, the second store in Sunway Pyramid seeks to cater to shoppers within the neighbouring cities such as the Klang Valey area, Selangor, and Petaling Jaya. Press Release: More Than 53,000 Runners Race Through The City At The Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore

SINGAPORE, 7 DECEMBER 2014 — More than 53,000 runners took part in this morning’s Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2014 (SCMS) as runners made their way towards the Padang from various starting points across the island. Flagging off the Marathon category this year was Haile Gebrselassie, widely regarded as one of the greatest runners on earth. The Ethiopian legend also took part in the 10km race, which marked his debut run in Southeast-Asia.

Finishing his race in third with a time of 00:30:00, Gebrselassie said, “The crowd in Singapore has been fantastic and I treated the race as a celebration. It’s a wonderful atmosphere and everything was great, except the weather. The humidity is not something I expected but the guys from Kenya really pushed me to go faster.”

Gebrselassie’s female compatriot, Waganesh Amare, broke the hold the Kenyans have had on the Marathon category with her winning performance of 02:46:54. She trumped Kenyans Elizabeth Chemweno (02:47:50) and Pauline Wangui (02:48:59).

“The weather was really warm but I’m very happy to win the race here, especially because it’s been won by Kenyans so many times. I really didn’t expect to win, but in spite of my fatigue at the 39km mark, I felt if I pushed a little, I could really win the race, so I persevered.”

In the male category, barber turned elite runner, Kenneth Mungara, reclaimed the crown he won in 2010 finishing the race with a time of 02:16:42. Expressing his delight in winning the race, Mungara said, “The race today was very nice, the weather was good and I enjoyed it. I was alone and didn’t have someone to push me to go even faster. I aim to be back again and to set a new course record.” Kenyans David Kiptui Tarus (02:19:07) Charles Kanyao (02:19:18) made up the rest of the podium.

In the local categories, Singapore’s favourite Mok Ying Ren defended his title with the time of 02:53:42, while Rachel See claimed the local Women’s Open category with a time of 03:17:13.

“I am very happy, this is my longest run since my injury. This is a good comeback run and a good sign as I can move on to my next phase of training and increase the intensity. I felt that the run was really enjoyable as I ran the first 30km with a group of friends. Moving on, I want to qualify for the next SEA Games and focus on the training once I finish NS in April. For the 2016 Olympics, I am exploring to work with coaches overseas,” commented Mok.
