Save Our Rainforest Race (SORR) will be held in Taman Botanikal Melaka, Ayeh Keroh, Melaka This Year

Kuala Lumpur, 29 January 2019
- Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam (PEKA) Malaysia is proud to announce the launch of the Save Our Rainforest Race (SORR) 2019. This year's SORR will see participants hiking through the beautiful forests of Taman Botanikal Melaka, Ayeh Keroh, Melaka on 30th March 2019.

This is the seventh time that PEKA is organising the annual race, beginning in Pahang (2013), Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Penang and at Hutan Simpan Sg Kerling, Selangor last year.

SORR is jointly organized with Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Melaka, under the approval from Melaka State Government, in conjunction with International Forest Day. The event is organised with collaboration from NALSMY and JOMRUN as the official online registration site. Registration fee is RM160 per team, which includes breakfast & lunch, medal, T-shirt, bib number, souvenirs and lucky draws. PEKA is expecting 1000 participants for this year SORR. The event is expected to be flagged off by the Melaka Chief Minister.

SORR is the only unique eco walk event in Malaysia where participants trek through the country’s rainforests to plant trees. Working together in teams of two, participants will navigate across the forest to complete tasks at the selected checkpoints until they reach the designated replanting area. Once there, they will plant the sapling and continue on the return leg of the course.

The tagline for this year’s SORR is “Save Our Rainforest to Save Our Wildlife”. We chose it to celebrate the varied and unique wildlife that our country is blessed with,” said PEKA President Puan Sri To' Puan Datuk Shariffa Sabrina Binti Syed Akil during the launch of SORR 2019 at Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

“Instead of valuing them, Malaysia’s wildlife has been brutalised, abused and killed, not only by poachers but due to human-animal conflict and the destruction of their habitat.”

“Incidents of gibbon trafficking, elephant and tiger intrusions are increasing because most Malaysians simply are not interested in solving the problem,” she added.

This is one of the reasons SORR was organised - to create awareness and to instil a sense of love and care towards the environment among Malaysians.

“I don’t understand how Malaysians allow Mother Nature to suffer. As children of nature, it is our duty to cherish her, treat her with the utmost respect and to protect her at all costs,” Sabrina said.

“Help us remind our fellow Malaysians about their duty to this mother that we all share. Do come and join us in the race to save our wildlife!"

PEKA would like to say thank you to our generous Sponsors CONCORDE SHAH ALAM, Tanah Aina Sdn. Bhd, iKHASAS, MYCAR, Women's Sports & Fitness Foundation Malaysia (WSFFM), NESTLE, KEEK Collection, Malaysia Airline Babad and SAHA Associate including Cempaka International School which never fails to support SORR since 2013.
