Celebrunner: Awie in Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal @ Istana Budaya

Finally, we managed to get Awie to do the running pose after several futile attempts in the past. We caught up with him after the media viewing night for Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal at Istana Budaya on 17 March 2011.

Awie puts on a curly wig for his potrayal of Malaysia's most loved cartoonist, Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, better known as Lat.

The musical traces Lat's passion for drawing to his childhood in a small village in Perak. Do you know that the nickname "Lat" originated from the word "Bulat" (round), refering to his round face when he was a kid?

I think they use prosthetics to make the boy actor's face rounder. :)

Lat (Daniel) with his father (Jalil Hamid) and mother (Nasz)

Lat (Awie) moved to Kuala Lumpur in search of a better life in Kuala Lumpur. There he worked at NST as a crime reporter under a not-so-mild-tempered Pak Samad (Omar Abdullah).

Lat joined a piano class just to learn how to play the song by John Lennon, Imagine. He met the love of his life at the piano class....Erm, not the Indian teacher though. LOL!

Meet Faezah (Atilia), Lat's girlfriend.

A funny moment in the show when Awie make some references to his Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah movie.

Lat became popular when his "sunat" cartoon appeared in Asia Magazine.

His popularity took him to London where he bumped into his childhood friend, Frankie (Douglas Lim).

Lat was at the peak of his fame.

But fame does has a price. Lat spent more time travelling than being with his family. His daughter and his wife suffered because of that.

Talk to the hand cause the face ain't listening anymore!

How did Lat manage to pull through the struggle to balance his life and being the national icon?

Will they live happily ever after?

Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Musical is no fairy tale though but for me, it is quite close, how a small kampung boy who loves drawing becomes the no. 1 cartoonist in Malaysia. Along his journey, pop some very interesting characters that help him one way or the other to achieve his dream.

Make this a must watch for your and your family. Truly a slice of Malaysian Life spiced up with songs and dance within an inspiring and not forgetting, funny story of a cartoonist called Lat.

Standing ovation to Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid or Lat.

Real life Lat meeting the stage Lat (Awie).
