Day 1: Bangkok Buzz and Ringside Rumble!
Saturday, March 15th, 2025, started with a bang! Landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport, we were greeted by our amazing guide, Khun San San. Our first stop? The magnificent Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawihan and the iconic Giant Swing (Sao Chingcha). Wat Suthat, one of Bangkok's oldest and most impressive temples, is renowned for its stunning murals and serene atmosphere. The Giant Swing, a 21-meter-high red frame, was historically used in a Brahmanic ceremony, adding a mystical layer to its grandeur.

The courtyard surrounding the prayer hall at Wat Suthat Thepwararam features approximately 150 smaller Buddha statues. These statues are arranged along a covered walkway, creating a serene and harmonious atmosphere. |

The temple is also famous for its giant swing, or "Sao Ching Cha," which once played a role in traditional Brahmin ceremonies. |

A striking bronze monument, the Equestrian Statue of Chulalongkorn the Great, graces Bangkok's Royal Plaza, commemorating King Rama V. This 1908 statue, showing him in military dress on horseback, is a testament to his pivotal role in modernising Thailand. |
We hopped into tuk-tuks and whizzed through Bangkok's bustling streets, heading to the Equestrian Statue of Chulalongkorn the Great. This bronze masterpiece in the Royal Plaza honored King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), a visionary monarch who modernized Siam. The backdrop of the Dusit Palace, with its European-inspired architecture, contrasted beautifully with the traditional Thai elements. Next, we explored Wat Ratchanatdaram (Loha Prasat), a unique temple with 37 metallic spires representing the 37 virtues leading to enlightenment. Its multi-tiered structure, reminiscent of ancient Sri Lankan architecture, is truly a sight to behold.

Dusit Palace, situated in Bangkok, Thailand, is a remarkable royal complex showcasing a blend of Thai and European architectural influences. Built during the reign of King Rama V (Chulalongkorn the Great), this palace represents his vision of modernisation and cultural exchange. |

The architectural inspiration for Loha Prasat (or "Metal Castle") at Wat Ratchanatdaram traces its roots to Sri Lankan heritage. Specifically, King Rama III envisioned the temple's design based on ancient Sri Lankan Buddhist monasteries that featured multi-tiered structures adorned with spires. |
The Pak Khlong Talat (Flower Market) was a sensory explosion! Open 24/7, this market is a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances. We learned the delicate art of lotus petal folding, a traditional offering in Thai temples, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. As the sun set, we zipped past Khao San Road, the backpacker's paradise, and the vibrant Yaowarat (Chinatown), a culinary haven with its bustling street food scene.

Sunday morning was about fully experiencing the physicality of Muay Thai. We started with an intense Muay Thai training session at

I opted for the Suki Stir Fried glass noodles, and it was divine.

Day 3: Ayutthaya Adventures and Wai Kru Wonders!
Monday took us to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital. We started at the Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Centre, where we witnessed the intricate art of doll making, a traditional craft reflecting Thai culture. Then, we paid respects at the Nai Kanom Tom Monument, honoring the legendary Muay Thai hero. His story of defeating Burmese fighters with his bare hands is a testament to the power of Muay Thai.
.jpg) |
The Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Centre, a distinctive cultural landmark in Ang Thong Province which is a short drive from Ayutthaya, is dedicated to the exquisite craft of traditional Thai court dolls. |
.jpg) |
Established in 1976 as a royal project, the center not only preserves this unique art form but also offers crucial supplementary income to local communities impacted by floods. |
.jpg) |
Crafted from clay, these dolls are miniature works of art, vividly portraying scenes from Thai daily life and cultural traditions. From children engaged in classic games to monks receiving alms and fruit vendors navigating waterways, each meticulously handcrafted doll captures the artistry and heritage of the local community.
|
.jpg) |
Visitors can witness the intricate doll-making process firsthand and acquire these delightful pieces as unique souvenirs. |

We got to try our hand at painting two dolls, figures of Muay Thai fighters. |

And just like that, voilà! We created our own Muay Thai fighter dolls, a fun little souvenir to bring back home |

The Nai Khanom Tom Monument in Ayutthaya, Thailand, honours the 'Father of Muay Thai,' who famously defeated Burmese fighters in the 18th century. His skill and bravery solidified Muay Thai's place in history. |

The monument features a striking statue of Nai Khanom Tom in a Muay Thai stance, symbolizing his strength and dedication to the art of the "eight limbs." Surrounding the statue are depictions of Muay Thai techniques, such as punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, reflecting the essence of this martial art. |

This location functions as both a place of reverence for Muay Thai and a significant cultural monument, paying homage to Thailand's historical and traditional heritage. Every year on March 17th, Nai Khanom Tom's enduring legacy is honored with Nai Khanom Tom Day, also known as National Muay Thai Day, continuing to ignite the passion of Muay Thai fighters and enthusiasts worldwide. |

We also saw a replica of Nai Khanom Tom's wooden house nearby, which showcased the area's traditional lifestyle. |
Lunch at
Baan Pomphet, a riverside restaurant known for its authentic Ayutthaya cuisine and charming ambiance, was a culinary delight. Next, we visited
Baan Ajarn Kob School, where we learned about the spiritual significance of Sak Yant tattoos. These tattoos, believed to provide protection and strength, are an integral part of Muay Thai culture.

One of the dishes we order at the Baan Pomphet - Kaeng Som Cha-Om Kai Tod is a delightful combination of tangy tamarind soup, succulent shrimp, and a fragrant acacia pennata omelet, creating a uniquely satisfying flavour profile.

We visited Baan Ajarn Kob School, where we learned about the spiritual significance of Sak Yant tattoos. Within Muay Thai culture, Sak Yant tattoos are far more than mere body art; they are sacred talismans. Fighters receive these intricate designs as spiritual armor, believing they bestow protection, amplify strength, and attract good fortune in the ring, fostering unwavering confidence and focus.
|
.jpg) |
Crafted by Buddhist monks or Ajarns, these tattoos are applied using traditional methods, often with bamboo rods or metal needles. The unique symbolism of each Sak Yant design, inspired by Buddhist and Hindu beliefs, is amplified by the blessings and chants woven into the tattooing process |

For a seamless blend of leisure and business, Centara Ayutthaya provides a strategic location, only one hour from Bangkok. This all-inclusive destination features contemporary facilities, diverse dining, and convenient access to Central Ayutthaya and its UNESCO World Heritage landmarks. |
Check-in at the modern
Centara Ayutthaya Hotel, located near the city's historical sites, was followed by the highlight of the trip: the
17th Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony at Wat Mahathat and Wat Langkha Khao!
17th Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony
Standing amidst the awe-inspiring ruins of Ayutthaya, I felt a wave of history wash over me. But this wasn't just about crumbling temples and ancient stones; it was about the raw, vibrant energy of the 17th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony. Over 800 Muay Thai practitioners, a global tapestry of fighters, had descended upon this UNESCO-listed city, turning it into a living, breathing testament to Thailand's national martial art.
.jpg) |
We were incredibly fortunate to have VIP seats at the ceremony, which gave us an unparalleled view of the proceedings. We were right in the heart of the action, able to fully appreciate the intricate details of the Wai Kru ritual and the powerful energy of the event. |
For two days, the Ayutthaya Historical Park became a stage for a spectacle unlike any other. The synchronized Wai Kru dances, a deeply respectful homage to masters, unfolded before my eyes. Each fighter, adorned with a sacred headband, moved with a blend of grace and power, paying tribute to the ancient lineage of Muay Thai. It was more than just a performance; it was a ritual, a connection to the soul of this martial art.

The sheer scale of the event was incredible. Thousands of enthusiasts, hailing from every corner of the globe, filled the park. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong spoke passionately about the ceremony's role in showcasing Thailand's cultural soft power, and I could see exactly what he meant. This wasn't just a sports event; it was a cultural immersion.

Wat Mahathat and Wat Langkha Khao became hubs of activity. Beyond the captivating martial arts displays, I wandered through stalls showcasing traditional handicrafts, watched skilled artisans practice Sak Yant (sacred tattooing), and Muay Thai performances.
The Retro Thai Market was a feast for the senses, with the tantalizing aromas of local cuisine filling the air. Cultural performances added a festive layer to the atmosphere, a perfect blend of old and new.

The mongkhon, a sacred headband of deep cultural and spiritual importance within Muay Thai, is ceremoniously bestowed upon the participant by their trainers during the Wai Kru ritual. |
The Grand Wai Kru Ceremony at Wat Mahathat was the highlight. Thousands of practitioners, united in their respect, performed the Wai Kru ritual together. Watching renowned fighters like Prajanchai P.K. Saenchai Muay Thai Gym, Ferrari Fairtex, Yodkaikaew “Y2K” Fairtex, and Saemapetch Fairtex lead the ceremony was a truly powerful experience.
It reinforced not only Muay Thai’s cultural significance but also its potential to drive tourism. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) projected a significant economic impact, and it was easy to see why.

Unity through movement: Thousands performing the Wai Kru ritual in unison at Wat Mahathat. |
The ceremony also honored the legendary Nai Khanom Tom, a Siamese warrior whose victories against Burmese fighters in 1774 are still celebrated today. His performance of the Wai Kru dance, a symbol of his triumph, echoed through the ruins, a reminder of the enduring legacy of Muay Thai.

The 17th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony was more than just an event; it was a profound cultural experience. Standing amidst the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya, I witnessed the power of Muay Thai to unite people and celebrate a rich heritage.
Day 4: Sweet Treats and Ancient Temple Trails!
.jpg) |
Experience the grandeur of Khmer architecture at Ayutthaya's Wat Chai Watthanaram. Commissioned by King Prasat Thong in 1630, this royal monastery was erected not only to honor his foster mother but also to symbolize the prosperity and victory of his reign. While the temple endured damage during the fall of Ayutthaya and later flooding, subsequent restoration efforts have preserved its splendour. |
Tuesday began with a sweet treat: Roti Sai Mai, a colorful Thai dessert, similar to cotton candy wrapped in thin crepes at
Rotisaimai Bangimron. We then explored the breathtaking ruins of
Ayutthaya's old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Temples like
Wat Chai Watthanaram, with their towering stupas and ancient statues, offered a glimpse into the city's glorious past. Dressed in traditional Thai attire, we felt like royalty amidst the ancient temples.
.jpg) |
Roti Sai Mai Bang Imron, a popular Ayutthaya treat, features two crepe options – pandan-sesame or soy-white – and a colourful selection of cotton candy fillings: original, pandan, blueberry, strawberry, orange, and cocoa. |

When dessert becomes an art—Roti Sai Mai is the masterpiece |
.jpg) |
Happy faces with Sai Mai to take home! |
.jpg) |
I discovered that renting a traditional Thai outfit wasn't just dressing up; it was a portal to experiencing Thailand's rich heritage in a way I never expected. As I explored ancient ruins and serene temples, the Chut Thai transformed my trip into a truly magical, cultural immersion. |
.jpg) |
The male Chut Thai, a timeless symbol of Thailand's cultural heritage, features a long-sleeved silk "Raj pattern" shirt with a mandarin collar, neatly tucked into the waistband for a polished look, paired with the distinctive 'Chong Kraben' – wrapped cloth pants resembling loose trousers, crafted from vibrant silk or cotton with intricate Thai patterns. Completing the ensemble, a belt, often embellished with traditional designs, secures the Chong Kraben, while a decorative silk or brocade sash may be added as an elegant waist accent. |
.jpg) |
For a truly magical and immersive Thai experience, dress in Chut Thai when visiting royal palaces, ruins, or temples. Highly recommended! |
.jpg) |
I felt like I was stepping into a living history book. If you want to make your next trip to Thailand truly special, I wholeheartedly recommend embracing your inner Thai royalty and renting a traditional outfit. |
Our final lunch was at
Lung Lan Boat Noodle, known for its flavourful and affordable noodle dishes, before heading back to Bangkok. It was a bittersweet farewell to Thailand.
.jpg) |
I ordered the Boat Beef Noodles - a delightful blend of bold flavours and comforting textures. Originating from Thai floating markets, this dish features tender slices of beef in a rich, aromatic broth infused with spices and herbs. Served with rice noodles and a medley of fresh garnishes like bean sprouts, cilantro, and lime, it's the perfect balance of savoury, tangy, and slightly sweet notes. A soul-warming classic that offers a true taste of Thailand! |
.jpg) |
We also ordered the Thai traditional chicken satay - a delicious and aromatic dish featuring tender pieces of marinated chicken grilled on skewers. The marinade often includes a fragrant mix of turmeric, garlic, coriander, and coconut milk, which gives the chicken its signature golden hue and savoury sweetness. |
This trip was an incredible blend of adventure, culture, and culinary delights. From the adrenaline-pumping Muay Thai fights to the serene temples of Ayutthaya, every moment was unforgettable. If you're looking for a unique and immersive travel experience, Thailand is calling!

It was with heavy hearts that we left. We're counting down the days until we can return to Thailand. |
The 17th Wai Kru ceremony was a cultural experience I'll never forget! If you want to witness this amazing annual Muay Thai tradition, the Tourism Authority of Thailand invites you to the 18th Wai Kru ceremony in 2026. I highly suggest you check the TAT website for official dates, you won't want to miss it!
