Kuala Lumpur, 36 June 2026 – In a massive boost for the local distance running community, Malaysia Athletics has officially named the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) as the official preliminary selection event for the marathon category ahead of the 2027 SEA Games.
The announcement was formalized via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at Wisma OCM between Malaysia Athletics Deputy President Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh and Rainer Biemans, Director of Dirigo Events (the rights holder and organizer of KLSCM). The high-profile signing was witnessed by OCM Chief Executive Officer Fong Wan Hor and NSC Athlete Division Director Zaim Yusof.
Direct Entry to the 'Long List': The Qualifying Benchmarks
To bring transparency and an elite edge to national team selections, a clear performance-based pathway has been established. Following this announcement, the top 5 men and top 5 women who beat the strict qualifying benchmarks—2:45:00 for men and 3:15:00 for women—will be placed directly onto the national provisional 'Long List' for the games.
This proactive, athlete-first strategy aims to eliminate last-minute selection anxiety, giving Malaysia’s finest distance runners ample preparation time and a structured timeline to peak just in time to chase medals on home soil in 2027.
"Malaysia has marathon talents that can be further nurtured, and we are exploring structured and better-planned pathways to take them to the next level," said Dato’ Wan Hisham. "We are keen on increasing and supporting the presence of our Malaysian marathon athletes on the international stage."
The Perfect Stage: Malaysia’s Only World Athletics Elite Label Race
As the first and only road race in the country to hold the prestigious World Athletics Elite Label, KLSCM is uniquely qualified to serve as the crucible for Malaysia's future international representatives.
The upcoming KLSCM 2026, scheduled for October 3 and 4, is expected to draw a massive field of local elites and international runners from over 70 countries—including top-tier rivals from neighboring Southeast Asian nations who will provide a true litmus test for our local hopefuls.
"We are very honored that KLSCM has been selected," said Rainer Biemans, Project Director of KLSCM. "Dirigo Events has always been committed to improving and elevating the standards of distance running in Malaysia. This marks the first step in a long collaboration in building development and sustainability in the sport for the athletes and the industry as the country prepares to host the SEA Games in 2027."
Beyond the Race: Sports Science and Global Exposure
The partnership goes far beyond a single race weekend. The MOU outlines a comprehensive framework designed to support the athletes who make the cut, including:
- Structured Development: Access to regional and international race exposure to build tactical racing experience.
- Elite Support: Full access to high-performance facilities and cutting-edge sports science services under the National Sports Institute (ISN).
- Coaching Synergies: Collaborative programs to elevate local marathon coaching standards.
Both training entities will meet in the coming weeks to iron out the specific technical details of the development blueprint.
Runwitme Says: This is the structural shake-up Malaysian marathon running has been waiting for. By setting clear benchmarks (2:45 / 3:15) and utilizing a World Athletics Elite Label platform like KLSCM, local runners finally have a transparent, merit-based target to shoot for. Time to lace up and log those heavy mileage weeks!
