Donate Your Old Running Shoes To Orang Asli and Get RM100 Shoe Voucher!

An initiation started by Running Lab’s founder Walter Tan since 2008 in Singapore, this is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in its 3rd year running, to collect shoes for the less fortunate who cannot afford to have proper shoes in their daily lives. In commemoration of Running Lab’s fourth (4th) branch in Kuala Lumpur, Project Love Sneaker will once again lead the way to lend a helping hand in providing the donated shoes to the Orang Asli/Indigenous Community of Malaysia at the end of this campaign.

“Regular runners are advised to replace their running shoes after clocking about 800km mileage in order to prevent from running injuries. Most of the time, these shoes are still in relatively good condition and it is too wasteful to dump them. Hence, instead of throwing them away, we want to provide an avenue for runners to give a second life to these used running shoes. The shoes can be donated to protect the feet and make a difference to the lives of the less fortunate people locally and abroad”, said Karen Chua, Marketing Manager, Outdoor Venture Pte Ltd.

The story of Budhia Singh, the World's Youngest Marathon Runner, in HBO's Documentary MARATHON BOY on Nov. 3

As you are possibly gearing up for the New York City Marathon on November 6, we wanted to put the HBO documentary Marathon Boy on your radar.

The film premieres on HBO just three days before the NYC marathon and is about Budhia Singh, the world’s youngest marathon runner. Budhia was plucked from the slums of India by his coach, Baranchi Das, and trained to become India's greatest runner, but what starts as the real Slumdog Millionaire turns into the stuff of film noir: a tale of greed, envy and broken dreams.

Budhia’s coach seizes the opportunity to do something much more symbolic for India’s poor, as he has done so many times for other slum children in the judo arena. He embarks on a mission to turn Budhia into a running phenomenon. Within six months, Budhia had run twenty half-marathons, and within a year, he had run 48 full marathons.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that he was 5 years old.

Celebrunner: Bernard Chandran @ Area27 Launch

Look at him go! Meet Bernard Chandran, one of the most fashionable men in Malaysia, a fashion designer extraordinaire.

We caught up with Bernard at the official launch of Area27 recently.

Located on shopping street, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Area27 is a multi-label store-cum-hip showcase that defies traditional boundaries and re-defines high street fashion with an attitude.

A project by Bernard Chandran, Area27 presents ideal and artistic values and expression on fashion. Keeping with the unpretentious culture of this intelligent store, the merchandise represents the pop culture of the young and the fun-living.

Like pop art’s take on fashion, it includes popular designs, music of different genres that personify cult abstraction, objects of desire to icons, ‘villains’ and ‘heroes’. The labels that are sold here include the Puma Blackstation range like Alexander McQueen, Rudolf Dassler, Mihara Yasuhiro and Puma Area27 customised trainers.

Area27 views fashion through a more unconventional lens. The store-cum-gallery reinvents itself each season featuring clothes and accessories from off track around-the-world labels including Natalija Jansone, Butterflysoulfire, Ana Sekularac, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Riccardo Forconi, Suzanne Werson, La Boite as well as Area27’s own labels like Forknspoon, BCArea27, Animal Kingdom, Tanestrran2001, Skullarea, words and Negaraku and a variety of graphic t-shirts by up-and-coming designers.

The launch was attended by Bernard's family...

Celebrity friends. The event were hosted by Will Quah & Xandria Ooi. Seen here are Dennis Lau and Yuri, Xandria's hubby!

The four sisters - Sharifah Aryana, Aleysha, Amani dan Aleya.

Joanne De Rosario and Deborah Henry.

Jehan Miskin.

Melissa Indot & Debbie Goh

Bernard letting his creative juice flow onto a new Proton Satria Neo!

Bernard's parents also joined in the fun of spraying a brand new Satria Neo with colourful paint. What strong support Bernard gets from his parents!

Bernard is taking street fashion to the street literally! The model paraded on the street with Bernard latest designs.

As Bernard Chandran cited, Area27 is an inspiration and channeling the soul, passion and fire of the teenage spirit. “It is for the individual that would like to find respite from the mainstream but at the same time is unwilling to compromise on style. This is where fashion becomes personal to the individual.

Check out the video of the launching ceremony below!

ENJOY!

News: Rock To Rock Run 2011 Aims To Raise RM50,000 For Charity

Following the success of the first Rock to Rock Run in 2010, this charity fun run is back for the second year. Rock to Rock Run 2011 organized by Hard Rock Hotel Penang with the support from the Penang State Government, Penang Amateur Athletic Association (PAAA) and Majlis Sukan Negeri (MSN) is scheduled to be held on 13 November 2011 from 6.30am at Batu Ferringhi to Teluk Bahang. All proceeds from this run will benefit the Crystal Family Home and Association of Rehab of the Disabled. Hard Rock Hotel Penang together with all its partners aim to raise RM50,000 which will be shared between both organizations.

This year’s run saw a return support from its past sponsors namely AMD, Lions Club Gold Coast and Tropical Spice Garden. AMD has generously pledge their commitment towards this project as the sole Diamond Sponsor with a donation of RM20,000 to support this event. Rock to Rock Run has also received support from new sponsors which include the Penang Turf Club, Agilent Technologies and Brooks.

“In 2010, we witness a great success from first Rock to Rock Run. Our first charity together with our generous sponsors successfully raised over RM40,000 for a charitable home in Penang. This year, we are confident to exceed our past success based on the support from the sponsors and the response that we have been receiving from the runners. Everyone is looking forward to this event,” said Shane Coates, Executive Assistant Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Penang.

The press conference cum official launch was hosted by Hard Rock Hotel Penang, represented by Mr. Shane Coates, Executive Assistant Manager and was officiated by the Y.B. Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, Exco of Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development. Also present were Mr. Lee Moon Khoon from AMD, Mr. Francis Goh from Lions Club (Gold Coast), Mr. Govindasamy Veeriah from Penang Amateur Athletic Association (PAAA), Pastor David Barnabas and Sister Esther Barnabas of Crystal Family Home and Tan Ooi Cheng, Honorary Secretary of Persatuan Pemulihan Orang-Orang Cacat Negeri Pulau Pinang.

CRYSTAL FAMILY HOME

Crystal Family Home (CFH) is a non-profit voluntary welfare organization established by couple Barnabas & Esther in 2009 to help children who need a home. Children in need at the home include those who are being raised by grandparents who are no longer able; children who have been abused, neglected, orphaned, troubled, or poor, and children from dysfunctional families.

ASSOCIATION OF REHAB OF THE DISABLED

The Association of the Rehabilitation of the Disabled is a non-profit organization established in 1989 at Jalan Besi, Green Lane. The Association provides opportunities for disabled persons – both physical and intellectual – to gain employment. By subcontracting parts from local factories, the disabled are trained to fix electronic components as well as to assemble jewellery boxes. As such, they get to contribute at work while making a decent amount to take home.

Rock to Rock Run is now open for registration till 7 October 2010. The run is limited to the first 1500 participants. Registration fee is RM50 per person (inclusive of a Hard Rock Hotel special edition tee). More details about this run and registration form are available at penang.hardrockhotels.net
