It was an awesome sight to see participants in teams of four racing through the streets past some of Kuala Lumpur’s most iconic landmarks including Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Parliament House, National Mosque, Islamic Arts Museum, Kuala Lumpur’s Butterfly Sanctuary and Perdana Botanical Gardens enclave.

The inaugural ACR KL 2016 is the first-of-its-kind night relay marathon race—made possible by title sponsor ASICS, the true sport performance brand and event organiser, Spectrum Worldwide. Open to professionals and amateurs from all-men, all-women to mixed-gender categories, the night race is a community engagement effort by ASICS to promote healthy and active lifestyles. The night race offered two categories – full marathon with each team member running 10.5km (4×10.5km) while team members of the half marathon category ran 5.25km (4×5.25km).

A “race village” was specially constructed for participants to perform their warm-ups while waiting for their teammates to complete their individual run. Live DJ music and colourful street performers added to the electrifying atmosphere of the night race as families, spectators and friends cheered the runners throughout the night, particularly at the relay changeover zones. The race was also broadcasted live on a giant LED screen along with social media messages posted by runners. Live tracking also kept everyone updated on the leading teams and helped runners to get ready to start running to enliven the evening for both runners and spectators.
