Cyclists Cause Stir During KLSCM 2024

Kuala Lumpur, 6 October 2024 - A group of runners participating in the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) 2024 encountered an unexpected incident during the race. According to one runner, KK Yum, two cyclists were seen riding on the Akleh highway, a route designated for marathon participants only.

"I was around the 18km mark when I heard someone say 'Excuse me.' I turned around and saw a male and female cyclist approaching," Yum recounted. "Most of us were already tired, but we made way for them to pass."

When Yum asked if the cyclists were part of the marathon organizers, they replied negatively. "I pointed out that they shouldn't be on the AKLEH highway," Yum said. "Instead of apologizing, the man arrogantly told me to 'REPORT ME lah.'"

The incident escalated when the man chased Yum on his bike and accused him of lacking community spirit. Other runners joined in, shouting "Halau, Halau!" (Get out, get out!) until the cyclists eventually left the route.

"We runners only get access to the AKLEH and DUKE highways once a year," Yum emphasized. "It's not the time for others to use the route for personal use. If you have a sense of community, you should turn around and exit when you see the road is crowded."

The incident has sparked discussions about the safety and exclusivity of the marathon route. Many runners expressed frustration over the cyclists' behavior and questioned how they were able to access the highway.
