Shoe Review: ASICS-GEL Nimbus 20

Asics is synonymous with comfortable running shoes. When we were given the opportunity by Asics Malaysia to test a pair of GEL-Nimbus 20, we gladly accepted it. Since it’s named after the cloud, they should be comfortable, right?
Yes! All of the cushioned shoes from ASICS are extremely soft and responsive as if you are walking on clouds.

This review was generated after we clocked more than 50km run in them in the following road races.
1) 10km Standard Chartered KL Marathon
2) 5K National Geographic Earth Day Run
3) 13km Besraya Duo highway Challenge 2018
4) 10km KK Ceria Run
5) 21km Score Run Night Series
6) 3km Pacemakers Anniversary Relay

The GEL-Nimbus is a highly structured, neutral trainer that has been the flagship plush trainer of the Asics line for twenty years. It continues to deliver a comfortable underfoot feel and a responsive ride.

We immediately fell in love with its plush luxurious feeling when slipped our feet into them. The tongue and collar are heavily padded, giving the shoe a soft and snug feelings. In fact, they are so soft, we didn't even spend much time trying to break into them.

The upper is made of a new lightweight gradient mesh material which provides the foot with an open coverage for a well-ventilated running experience. Enhanced with the ASICS FluidFit technology, the upper of the shoe also provides a more comfortable, snug fit.

The GEL-Nimbus 20 also features an enhanced heel counter that is specifically designed to support and secure the rear section of the foot.

The midsole of the ASICS GEL-Nimbus 20 is made using FLYTEFOAM technology. It efficiently absorbs shock and delivers high energy return for a more responsive ride. Coupled with the FluidRide technology the shoe provides a satisfying bounce-back and added cushioning. It works impressively well with the notable ASICS Rearfoot and Forefoot GEL Cushioning System. The GEL Cushioning reduces impact shock and delivers a smooth heel-to-toe transition.

The outsole of the GEL-Nimbus 20 uses the ASICS High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) material which is well-known for its durability. The Guidance Line technology is also present in the sole unit to deliver enhanced gait efficiency.

We love everything about the GEL-Nimbus - the sturdy construction, breathable upper, very responsive and flexible, superior heel lockdown and heel stability.

Can’t think of any cons except probably the shoe is a bit clunky for the fast tempo run.

Having run more than 50km in them, we enjoy its smooth ride and comfortable underfoot feel. We can't wait to bring the GEL-Nimbus for our half marathon in the Gold Coast Marathon this July. Wish us luck! :)

Before this, we have worn a couple of iteration of GEL-Kayano. Both GEL-Kayano and GEL-Nimbus are highly cushioned, thanks to the GEL technology. While GEL-Kayano is a stability shoe, the GEL-Nimbus is a neutral trainer. Hence, it is not a surprise when we noticed that the GEL-Kayano is firmer and provide better arch support compared to GEL-Nimbus. However, both are superior shoes. So, choose the shoe based on your foot type. If you have pronation issue, GEL-Kayano is the to-go-to shoe. If your feet are neutral, GEL-Nimbus would be the perfect pick for your run.

In conclusion, GEL-Nimbus is a superior cushioned shoe from ASICS, meant for serious training and the logging of lots of miles.

They are extremely plush yet responsive as if you are walking on clouds. So, grab a pair if cushioning is your thing!

Note: The review pair comes in Indigo Blue/Indigo Blue/Fiery Red colourway.

Recently, ASICS has also released its SAKURA collection colourway for the GEL-Nimbus. SAKURA collection offers the excellence in Spring style for runners who want to look as good as they feel.
