Media Release: OCM and Coca-Cola get Malaysians Moving

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and Coca-Cola have launched a new prescription that is designed to get Malaysians moving in order to improve their well-being by inculcating more physical activity into their lives.

Known as “Move Malaysia”, it will take the fight against obesity in Malaysia to another level through three components – Exercise Prescription with Healthcare & Fitness Experts and Allied Health Community known as Exercise is Medicine (EIM), academia outreach to integrate exercise and community engagement through various programmes such as Sport For All and Movement is Happiness – that are designed to address lifestyle inactivity and also inculcate an element of exercise for therapy or prevention of chronic disease.

It was launched in Kuala Lumpur today by OCM President, Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja'afar; Move Malaysia President, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato’ Dr M. Jegathesan; and Gill McLaren, General Manager, Singapore-Malaysia-Brunei Region of The Coca-Cola Company.

EIM is a global initiative spearheaded by the American College of Sports Medicine that focuses on the importance of physical activity and exercise in promoting health and preventing disease where health care providers such as physicians are trained to counsel patients on a healthy lifestyle in order to make physical activity and exercise a standard part of a global disease prevention and treatment.

“We would like to eventually see the health care and fitness community advocating physical activity and creating a broad awareness that exercise is, indeed, medicine to make a real difference in the lifestyle choices and as a prevention treatment to chronic diseases for their patients,” said Jegathesan.

The rationale behind EIM is that lifestyle behaviours, including poor diet and physical inactivity, are leading to higher rates of chronic disease and the way to counter that is through an increase in physical activity and exercise.

Studies by the World Health Organization’s show that after high blood pressure, tobacco use and high blood glucose, physical inactivity constitutes the fourth leading cause of death globally, attributing to about 3.3 million deaths per year.

*Worldwide, it is estimated that physical inactivity causes:
• 6% of the global burden of disease from coronary heart disease;
• 7% of Type II Diabetes; and
• 10% of breast and colon cancer cases.

Inactivity also causes 9% of premature mortality, or more than 5.3 million of the 57 million deaths that occurred worldwide in 2008. On the other hand, regular physical activity:
• reduces mortality and the risk of recurrent breast cancer by approximately 50%;
• reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease;
• lowers the risk of all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer-specific specific mortality in adults with higher levels of muscle strength; and
• leads to higher academic performance in children and adults

Despite these health concerns of being physically inactive:
• More than half of U.S. adults (56%) do not meet the recommendations for sufficient physical activity set forth by the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans,
• U.S. adolescents and adults spend almost eight hours a day in sedentary behaviors, and
• As much as 36% of adults engaged in no leisure-time PA at all.

Coca-Cola was the first founding corporate partner of Exercise is Medicine – a global partnership dedicated to encouraging doctors and health care providers to prescribe exercise as medical treatment – and provides grant funding, foundational support and promotional help to the initiative, which now serves 34 countries and helps spread the word that being active can save lives.

The doctors under this initiative will be looking at how to use exercise as a form of medicine and will assess patient’s physical activity levels then provide them with an exercise prescription or referral to an accredited fitness trainer.

To date, 90 health professionals and 85 fitness professionals in Malaysia have already been trained in Exercise is Medicine, led by the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia.

“Efforts are already underway in Malaysia to create a system that will support health care providers to facilitate patient referral to health and fitness professionals for comprehensive exercise prescription,” added Jegathesan.

On the academia front, Move Malaysia has engaged with lecturers from UKM and Perdana University to lead the Research & Education component where medical academicians and students are exposed to the exercise prescription concept with discussions on how to include this knowledge into the medical curriculum to bring long term change.

Lecturers from other universities have also been invited to explore and share their views on how the concept of prescribing exercise can benefit medical academicians and students in the long term.

The third component – Sport for All – will see Malaysians being encouraged to get moving by working with community sports organizations to combat sedentary lifestyles by promoting exercise, which Coca-Cola will complement with its Movement is Happiness initiative that aims encourage daily movement as a way to achieve emotional wellbeing and happiness through fun ways.

Workshops and seminars have been conducted for community sports event organisers to explore ideas and share their views on how to organise successful events, which included the participation of NGOs, universities, business owners, equipment suppliers, venue owners and sports enthusiasts who wants to convert their passion into business especially those nearing retirement.

“Train the trainer” programmes have also been held to target the younger generation to get themselves involved in sporting activities and an objective of Move Malaysia is to educate and create awareness among them on the importance of physical activities.

Move Malaysia has also been working with sports enthusiasts to take on a role as sports event organizers in order to see more community sports events being organised.

Inactivity, obesity and diabetes are critical issues that need to be addressed in Malaysia as they are on an alarming upward trend and now, more than ever before, it is vital that government, business and civil society come together under programmes such as “Move Malaysia” and work towards building effective partnerships and solutions.

So Move Malaysia will also seek to encourage more Malaysians to increase their physical activity in order to strike a balance between diet and exercise, which is known as the ‘energy balance’ where the calories consumed when eating and drinking are matched against the calories expended through physical activity.

“Coca-Cola is committed to encouraging activity and we want to create opportunities for people to easily see how activity can be integrated into daily life through fun and play such as taking the kids to play in the park or kick a ball around with our friends which is what our Movement is Happiness initiative is all about,” said General Manager, Singapore-Malaysia-Brunei Region of The Coca-Cola Company, Gill McLaren.

“Coca-Cola as a founding partner to EIM globally, is committed to the belief that physical activity is integral in the prevention and treatments of diseases and should be regularly assessed and “treated” as part of all medical care,” added McLaren.

“With Malaysia now identified as having the highest rate of obesity in Asia, the arrival of Move Malaysia is indeed timely as an impetus to put us back on the track to good health through exercise by doing something as simple as just adding a strong dose of physical activity to our lifestyles to balance out our love for food,” said Tunku Tan Sri Imran.

OCM is a partner to Move Malaysia in line with the International Olympic Council’s (IOC) initiative in 2013 to ensure that sport activities can be pursued by all ages as part of our lifestyle to create healthier individuals.

Taking a leaf from the IOC’s informative book Get Moving! – The IOC’s Guide to Managing Sports for All Programmes, its local chapter OCM also began working with the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia to train doctors to give ‘exercise prescription’ and train more fitness professionals in the concept, which then received a US$250,000 grant from The Coca-Cola Company

OCM’s partnership has also allowed Move Malaysia to approach the national and state sports associations as well as sports enthusiasts, retired sportsmen and sportswomen to play a bigger role in producing future athletes through the "Sport for All" programme.

Media Release: New Balance Updates the 890 Series with the 890v5

BOSTON, MA – April 2014. This Spring 2015 Boston-based New Balance will update the award-winning 890v4 with the New Balance 890v5. This update continues to deliver on the surprisingly light ride of REVlite, but with key design features maintained, and improved that are sure to please fans of the 890 series.

The New Balance 890 series has been embraced by runners around the globe for its forward thinking, responsive ride that is engineered to withstand fast. The 890v5 remains an ideal choice for the neutral runner who wants to run fast or feel fast in an extremely lightweight package, without sacrificing durability, cushioning, or support.

Similar to its predecessors, the new 890v5 continues to have an 8mm midsole offset , allowing runners to strike more mid-foot but allowing plenty of cushioning, just in case. The REVlite midsole and extended ABZORB® crash pad continue to offer runners that cradle-like feel, and now with an even sleeker sidewall design. Runners can expect the same intelligent geometries designed into each aspect of what is underfoot, and can enjoy a snappy responsive ride and a continuous transition from the toe spring in the forefoot.

The upper package of the 890v5 continues to be modern, city-chic, edgy, and made with a barely-there vision, allowing you to enjoy this incredibly light ride while feeling like the upper might just be a second-skin on the foot. A two-way stretch mesh upper with no-sew overlays and thin TPU film allows the foot to move comfortably through the gait cycle, while still wrapping it securely. A new neoprene stretch tongue ensures a comfortable lace up experience for each runner to get their exact fit and feel.

In 2011 the 890 series launched New Balance into the forefront of doing light the right way. With the 890v5 New Balance has created an even better shoe with integrity and intent behind each notch and groove. The 890v5 respects what runners fell in love with all those years ago, a futuristic REVlite platform with a responsive ride that is engineered to withstand fast, yet still protect the runner.

The 890v5 will debut in a variety of chic colors for men and women in end April 2015 in Malaysia with the suggested retail price of RM399.

Media Release: Italian Passuello and Swiss Bilham triumph at the 2015 TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya!

Putrajaya, Malaysia (April 5, 2015) Putrajaya was centre stage today for the 2015 TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya where approximately 1400 individuals with 80 teams took on the 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run in challenging temperatures and humidity here in Putrajaya.

Domenico Passuello (ITA) and Emma Bilham (CHE) emerged as champions at the event today. Present at the winning podium to award Passuello was En. Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, CEO of Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB) and YM Tengku Zarina, Head of Partnerships TIME dotCom awarded Bilham at the winning stand. The finish line was filled with energy and excitement as the crowd welcomed all the participants.

“They really deserved this win. It was such an outstanding performance on the course here today especially with the weather, its no easy challenge. Congratulations to these two amazing individuals for their win today” said Geoff Meyer, CEO IRONMAN Asia-Pacific.

For Passuello, who was coming in second after the bike course just behind Australian Josh Amberger, the Italian managed to outrun and take the lead at the run halfway point when Amberger retired from the race, giving Pasuello full advantage of making it as the 2015 TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya male champion with a time of 3:58:16.

The petite Swiss - Bilham kept a great pace throughout the course, leading in the run and coming in at a time of 4:24:47 and taking the win for the 2015 TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya female champion.

“The humidity was a real challenge and the run felt like a real killer with the heat, but I was happy to be racing here in Putrajaya. I passed a lot of participants who continued despite challenges like not having the right equipment. To me they are the true IRONMAN for making it possible”, said the Italian champion.

Emma Bilham was happy to be stepping up to the top of the winner’s podium, “I had a great start at the swim, and on the bike course I was quite happy to be riding beside Amelia Rose Watkinson (NZL) as to not lose my way on the course but unfortunately she suffered from a puncture. I just kept my pace and kept it going till the end!” exclaimed Bilham shortly after passing the finishing arch.

Five time IRONMAN World Champion Craig ‘Crowie’ Alexander and official ambassador of TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya came in shortly after Pasuello at a time of 4:09:38 followed by Swede - Frederik Croneborg at a time of 4:10:12.

“It’s a great course here today and I have to congratulate Domenico Passuello who was in such excellent shape for today’s race. I felt really fit coming in especially for the swim and run, but not so much for the bike so I really had to conserve as much as I can. There was a tremendous amount of support and amazing energy. I’m really happy that I chose to race this year and happy to be sharing the podium with Passuello and Croneborg. Well done everyone”, said Alexander.

Sweden’s Frederik Croneborg has completed every IRONMAN 70.3 race in Asia and was glowing of the race and the course after crossing the line in third place today. “I was really set on improving my placing this year. I came in fifth last year. Knowing that I was just closely behind Crowie was such an honour”, said Croneborg.

Coming in second place for the female pros was Katy Duffield of Australia at a time of 4:33:54 followed by Parys Edwards of Great Britain that came in with a dramatic finish at a time of 4:34:20.

The first Malaysian to finish the 2015 TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya for the second consecutive year in a row was Mr. Amran Ghani at a time of 4:44:38.

Putrajaya, Malaysia (April 3, 2015) – The TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya is all geared up and ready to run into its second consecutive year with a line up of world class international pro athletes leading this Sunday’s race.

During an official professional athlete press conference held earlier this morning, pro athletes set for this year’s edition were joined by Geoff Meyer, CEO of IRONMAN Asia Pacific, along with Hon. Dato' Rogaizat Abdullah - Vice President, Corporate Services, Putrajaya Corporation, Mr. Tony Nagamaiah – General Manager of Malaysia Major Events and Mr. WF Lee - Chief Entreprise Officer of TIME dotCom Berhad.

With approximately 1,400 participants expected to grace Putrajaya this weekend, CEO of IRONMAN Asia Pacific, Geoff Meyer said “we are delighted to be heading into our second year here in Putrajaya and having TIME dotCom Berhad as our title sponsor has really cemented our continued growth and success here in Malaysia”.

“We are also excited with the increase in Malaysian participants for the race this year. It is evident that there’s a fast growing interest in the region which is also why we have decided to host a duathlon to help the grassroots prepare themselves and get inspired to embark on more serious races like the 70.3 edition, hopefully next year!” continued Meyer.

“We have participants from 55 countries gearing up for Sunday here in the beautiful city of Putrajaya. We would have not been able to have had such an great city venue if not for our amazing partners at Putrajaya Corporation, and Malaysia Major Events”, ended Meyer.

The race is set to take place in a new venue this 2015 within Putrajaya at the Anjung Floria located in Precinct 4. Participants and supporters can enjoy the ambiance at the Royal Floria Putrajaya Flower and Garden Festival, filled with beautiful green scenery and an aesthetically unique Seri Saujana Bridge as the backdrop for the swim start and finish.

Hon. Dato' Rogaizat Abdullah - Vice President, Corporate Services, Putrajaya Corporation expressed his excitement at being seeing the event being held for the second time in Putrajaya.

“With our wide spaced roads, pedestrian walks and scenic view, Putrajaya provides one of the best landscapes for an event of this caliber. With the starting and finishing of the race happening at Anjung Floria Putrajaya in Presint 4, I was informed by the organizer that this year’s edition of the race will explore new grounds within Putrajaya and therefore, we are excited to see what Putrajaya and TIME IRONMAN Putrajaya 70.3 has to offer this year.”

Professional athletes on the panel for a Q&A were, Craig Alexander (AUS), Rebekah Keat (AUS), Josh Amberger (AUS), Amelia Rose Watkinson (NZL), Fredrik Croneborg (SWE) and Parys Edwards (GBR).

Malaysians and audiences from the world over can expect to see the five-time IRONMAN World Champion (and course record holder for the IRONMAN World Championship) Craig Alexander and Australia all-star triathlete Rebekah Keat headlining this year’s race.

Alexander shared his excitement for returning to Malaysia once again and coming in as the official ambassador for a second time. “There’s always amazing energy here in Malaysia. It’s good to be back not just as ambassador like last year, but as a competitor. Putrajaya really is remarkable, the road surface is just beautiful and it’s rare to be racing within a city course so I am really looking forward to it”, said Alexander.

“It is going to be a tough race for me with the heat and humidity but I am ready to give it my best!” assured Craig ‘Crowie’ Alexander.

Rebekah Keat, who will be racing in Malaysia for the first time, shared how thrilled she was to be racing in a tropical city “The roads are looking great and I can’t wait to check out the bike course today!” As for concerns with the weather, Keat said “Australians should really be climatized and familiar. I’ve been training in the South of Queensland, the weather has been similar, maybe some differences in the humidity but with the right hydration and focus it shouldn’t be too much of a problem” ended Keat.

Also on the pro panel was Parys Edwards of the UK who has been in Asia the past 8 weeks. “I’m quite attuned to the weather. I grew up in Africa so the heat is similar. I’m just predicting a tough run with the humidity but I’m excited and looking forward to racing this weekend!” said Edwards.

As a professional seasoned triathlete Edwards advised first timers to “Always stick to the plan of your race. There’s a tendency to get over excited. Be conservative with energy, lock in your time plans and maintain race pace!”.

Thrilled to be racing for the first time as well is New Zealander Amelia Rose Watkinson, “the courses look amazing. It’s hot, but the fact that it’s so beautiful here just makes up for it!” said Watkinson.

Thailand based Swede Fredrick Croneborg is hoping to improve his placing from last year’s edition. “It’s going to be a competitive race. We’ve got a great start list here. I am really looking forward to it.

I put a lot of thought on how I’m going to map this out compared to last year and I’m exited for Sunday,” said Croneborg.

Lastly on the panel was Josh Amberger of Australia. The young triathlete will be racing for the first time in Malaysia. “I’ve been here to Malaysia on a holiday a few years back. Being here again in such an immaculate city was a good choice I’ve made and I’m happy about it. I’ve been training hard and 70.3’s are my favourite to do. In Australia trainings are tough and they teach you to grit your teeth so I hope this Sunday is going to be great for me!” said Amberger.

TIME IRONMAN 70.3 Putrajaya is proud to have Putrajaya Shangri-La Hotel, PowerBar, Brooks, Rudy Project, 100Plus, F&N Ice Mountain, GH Speedbikes, Compressport, Prima Odyssey Travel & Tours and Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur to partner and support the 2015 edition of the race.

Media Release: Reebok ZPump Fusion Revolutionize Running With New Custom Fit Technology

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 10 March 2015: Reebok, the global pioneer in fitness innovation, launched the revolutionary new ZPump Fusion in Kuala Lumpur today; a running shoe that uniquely conforms and adapts to any foot.

The ZPump Fusion was unveiled at a Reebok FitHub Nu Sentral Mall where guests explored, through interactive try on experience, how Reebok has revolutionized its iconic innovation – The Pump technology – to create the new ZPump Fusion.

Kuala Lumpur has a unique fusion of different types of people from all over the world – many of which have a serious passion for running and fitness. “The ZPump Fusion is a huge step forward in the Reebok running category so we decided to come here for what is one of the brands biggest and most anticipated launches in our recent history,” said Matt O’Toole, President of Reebok.

Miss Malaysia Universe 2013 Carey Ng is pretty excited about Reebok Zpump Fusion launch.

Boasting a new and proprietary air-filled cage that surrounds and molds to any foot providing a custom, locked-in fit, the ZPump Fusion represents a revolutionary new approach to The Pump technology and how runners experience fit.

“Many running shoes are developed around a rigid, factory-developed last shape that can never be a true representation of your unique foot. The ZPump Fusion is completely structure-less when not inflated and then molds to the individual shape of your foot once you put it on and inflate. It conforms to the shape of your foot to give you a locked-in, custom fit when you run. To get that security, you may need three pumps or you may need eight pumps – it is fully customizable for each person,” said Paul Litchfield, original inventor of The Pump and Head of Reebok Advanced Concepts.

Unlike a traditional running shoe which is often made up of over 40 individual parts; the Reebok ZPump Fusion is made up of just three key parts, meaning no rigid components that restrict movement in the foot. Each of the three parts in the ZPump Fusion works together to deliver improved fit and control.

1. The Pump technology – The revolutionary air-filled cage is lightweight and fully customizable that pumps up and wraps around the individual shapes and contours of the foot to deliver a locked-in custom fit to achieve maximum performance.

2. The Fusion Sleeve – The Fusion Sleeve is a four way stretch sleeve that holds together the key components of the ZPump Fusion. A lightweight and seamless compression sleeve, it fuses The Pump technology to any runners’ foot to provide improved control and comfort as they run.

3. ZRATED outsole – The high-speed, underfoot performance that is essential to any high tempo running shoe is provided by the ZRATED outsole. Inspired by high performance ZRATED tires, the edges and underfoot grooves provide increased handling and control so runners can stop, start and turn on a dime.

When The Pump actuator on the heel of the ZPump Fusion is pushed, air is channeled through the valve and into the air-filled cage enabling it to fill and clasp around the upper and heel in a way that is unique to each foot. To release the air, runners can simply deflate using the release valve.

“The evolution we have made to The Pump technology in the ZPump Fusion is a huge step forward for Reebok and is keeping with our constant drive for new innovations. Runners have been waiting for a shoe that can be customized to their individual foot shape. The Reebok ZPump Fusion is the shoe that does it. We are excited to get it on the feet of runners because we know they will feel the difference immediately” said Bill McInnis, Head of Running – Reebok.

Revolutionizing The Pump technology with the unique Reebok ZPump Fusion is part of the global fitness brand’s mission to change how people perceive and experience fitness. Reebok has issued a bold challenge for the world to “Be More Human” as part of its new brand campaign; a unique point of view that embodies the brand’s new symbol, the Reebok Delta.

“Reebok believes that by pushing ourselves to the brink and testing our limitations, we become better partners, leaders, parents and better friends. By adopting a Reebok approach to your fitness lifestyle, you can aim to be the best you can be socially, mentally and physically. To be more in tune with that natural, human part of yourself that fitness can explore”, said O’Toole.

“The ZPump Fusion doesn’t just provide a locked-in custom fit for your feet, it also locks you into focus so you can push your body, test those limits and Be More Human”.

Media Release: Milo Malaysia Breakfast Day Reaches Out To More Malaysians

Kuala Lumpur, 25 March 2015 – MILO®, the leading breakfast beverage loved by all Malaysians, makes its return by going further and fueling a bigger mission to connect with more Malaysians nationwide on its breakfast beliefs with Malaysia Breakfast Day – Malaysia’s largest breakfast gathering. This year, the annual Malaysia Breakfast Day will be expanded to three cities – Putrajaya, Kuching, and Ipoh.

“Malaysia Breakfast Day was received very positively in the previous years. By expanding our outreach beyond Kuala Lumpur, we hope that more Malaysians will feel closer to The MILO® Breakfast cause and support this movement together with family and friends,” says Philomena Tan, Business Executive Manager of MILO® Business Unit in Nestle. “More Malaysians can now join us with our expanded event footprints across Malaysia.”

Running for its third consecutive year, Malaysia Breakfast Day will be held in Ipoh, Perak on 12th April 2015, Kuching, Sarawak on 26th April 2015, and Dataran Putrajaya on 10th May 2015.

Tan adds that the anticipation of Malaysia Breakfast Day rises from it being not only the largest breakfast gathering but beyond. “More breakfast gatherings mean more breakfast eating conversion and more families convinced to be breakfast advocators. Multiple touch-points are important for us to reach out to as many people as possible. We always have great line-ups of activities during Malaysia Breakfast Day so we are thrilled that more Malaysians would be able to join the breakfast occasion with us this year.”

Alongside with the 7-km and 3-km runs during Malaysia Breakfast Day, there will be a series of interactive and fun-filled activities available for every member of the family. The 3-km fun run is designed for families’ while the 7-km run is for the running enthusiasts.

Most importantly, MILO®’s paramount mission in rallying the nation to have the right nutritional breakfast choices apart from having an active lifestyle will be further amplified through a healthy spread of local breakfast delights available to all participants in Malaysia Breakfast Day.

MILO® believes that raising awareness is important but driving change is pivotal in shifting the perceptions of the nation. The MILO® Breakfast Movement.is a call for action aimed at Malaysians to make right nutritional decisions for their children and also for their family. "As an advocator of healthy living, we believe that the nation can adopt an improved view on healthy living and start practicing towards a healthier eating nation,” adds Tan.

She continues: “As the number one choice of breakfast beverage, we want to continue to provide the right energy for Malaysians to take on their day and start the day right. Together with balanced food intake, MILO®’s perfect ratio of nutrients will provide Malaysians with the much needed fuel to take on both physical and mental challenges each day.”

Cher Siew Wei, corporate wellness manager of Nestle, explains: “We mustn’t forget that skipping breakfast deprives children of energy needed to stay focused and alert. Not only that, kids grow in their sleep and lose 80% of their energy when they wake up; which is why, they must have breakfast to recharge for the day.” Siew Wei and her team of nutritionists will be at Malaysia Breakfast Days to remind Malaysians on the importance of not skipping breakfast and offer advice and information relating to appropriate breakfast nutrition, right balance of nutrients that each member of the family needs.

MILO® will also further engage Malaysians on the importance of breakfast and drive participation of Malaysia Breakfast Day via activities in-store and on-ground from April to June 2015.

An informative breakfast webpage (www.milo.com.my/breakfast) is available for those connected online, where they can find creative breakfast ideas and tips for a healthier start of the day.

MILO® hopes that people will still be part of the Malaysia Breakfast Day even if they can’t make it to the events. “Malaysia Breakfast Day is bigger than just being a large breakfast gathering. It is a drive to ask Malaysians to have MILO® with breakfast wherever they are and be a MILO® breakfast advocator with us.”

To be a part of the movement, Malaysians are encouraged to hashtag #mbd2015 when they are having breakfast no matter where they are.

Media Release: The Evolution of Visible Air (Nike Air Max)

In 1987, Nike Air was not a new proposition. Runners were already familiar with the benefits of the cushioning technology, which first appeared in the Nike Tailwind in 1978. But seeing is believing.

Nike Air hit a high when it became more than a feeling. Nike designer Tinker Hatfield set out to make the breakthrough technology visible so runners could better understand its cushioning benefits. He created the Nike Air Max with Visible Air, which gave birth to a franchise that forever altered the course of sneakers.

“I remember the first blow-molded Air-Sole unit. We worked so hard on that and had no idea if people would embrace it. I was at an airport right around the time the first Air Max sneaker launched. I was calling a tech in the lab when someone walked by wearing a pair. I stared at him from the phone booth and said, ‘Somebody bought them. I see the Air-Sole going up and down.’ It was a big risk, but bigger reward. For the Air Max family, it's only up from here.” - David Forland
