Profess your love for running by signing up for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM) 2011! It was launched on 14 February 2011 at official hotel, Doubletree by Hilton, the same day when all the lovers around the world express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards. :)
We even get a special Happy Valentine's Day wish from the Minister of Youth and Sports Malaysia, YB Dato' Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek during the opening of his speech! How cheeky! Heheh!
YB Dato Sri Shabery Cheek said, "The SCKLM plays a major role to encourage a healthy lifestyle for Malaysias of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels. Running is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone - which underscores our mission to develop a society that adopts a sports culture towards our nation's unity and development."
Osman Morad, CEO and Managing Director of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad, as the title sponsor added, "The spirit of marathons embody many shared values with the Bank's brand philosophy - going the distance, preservering for excellence, a positive "can-do" attitude, creativity and passion. We are encouraged by the nethusiasm Malaysian and international runners show towards the marathon, and we look forward to be running alongside them this year together with the staff of Standard Chartered and their families."
Rainer Biemans, Project Director of Golazo Sdn. Bhd. co-organiser of SCKLM 2011 together with Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) noted, "We're pleased that the marathon event continues to grow each year. The marathon is still young but it has shown encouraging progress. From the first year of 13,500 runners, this year the SCKLM 2011 aims to host more than 25,000 runners."
From a modest beginning two years ago, the SCKLM has now grown into a powerful platform giving thousands of people a reason to feel extraodinary. What began as a simple tour with only 800 full marathon runners has increased by almost 220% to 1,900 full marathoners in 2010.
The evolution of the marathon's taglines - from the first year's "Run Your Race" to last year's "Run As One" to this year's "Run With Us" - underscores the inclusive and unifying spirit of the race.
The prize package offered for the marathon is the highest amongst all marathons in Malaysia, with a total prize money of USD100,000. The marathon is open to the general public and participants can opt to in five categories below:
Individuals - 4 different distances (Open, Veterans and Malaysians only)
Kids Dash - For kids between 6-12 years old
Run for a Cause - Raise funds for featured charities
Corporate Challenge - Compete as a corporate team while running for charity
Sponsored Entries - Run with a group of friends, classmates or anyone you choose.
During the Q&A session, we asked the organiser what are the activities lined up to promote SCKLM. We were excited to find out there are many pre-race activities that will be organised such as running clinics, roadshow and a special pre-marathon event at Putrajaya in May, in conjunction with Hari Belia Negara 2011.
