Exclusive: An Interview with Khairy Jamaluddin, the New Youth and Sports Minister

Finally, a sports minister who runs! We are quite happy to hear that Khairy Jamaluddin, the newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister will be taking part in the 10km road race in the coming Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2013.

Khairy, who is active in sports, is also former Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president II, FAM National Team Management Committee chairman and FAM Women Football Committee chairman.

We had a chance to talk to him after the flag off ceremony of the Standard Chartered Fun Run at Putrajaya last weekend. Check it out!

Are you a runner?
Yes. I run for recreation and fitness.

How often do you run?
I stopped because of the election but before that, I run regularly about three times a week.

How far do you normally go?
About 5km around my neighbourhood in Bukit Damansara which is a hilly area. Every time I run, I get the hills.

Who's your training partner?
Normally I run alone. Occasionally, with my brother in law.

Are you excited about running the 10km race in the coming Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM)?
Yes. I am very excited! I don’t really run that far for my normal exercise. This will be double my normal distance. But I have done it before few times before like for charity run.

What is your expectation?
Well, 10K is most popular one and most people are capable to do it, realistically, I hope to join in the fun and post a decent time.

What is your message to the readers of this blog?
I hope more Malaysians will take up running. It's a great sport and a great way to get fit. It doesn’t require huge expenditure. You need a good pair of running shoes.

I wanna make it a culture for us to run and also to increase the safety for runners. Safety to runners is very crucial because I am a runner myself. I run in Bukit Damansara. That area is okay but I'd like to run further out. Sometimes it can get very scary with all the car and motorcycles. I'd like to see the Malaysian roads are safer for runners and cyclists; probably have designated lanes for running or cycling on certain days.

Is that one of your agenda as the new Youth and Sports Minister?
I have a lot of ideas. Not just in terms of high performance, high impact sports where we can win gold medal but also community-based sports like running where a lot of people are involved. People deserve sports. One thing we can do is to look into the safety aspect of the sport.

Runwitme Says: Khairy will be lacing up his running shoes to join 17,000 runners in the 10km category in the SCKLM on 30 June 2013. For more info about SCKLM, please click

Press Release: The ROASTERS Chicken Run 2013

Kuala Lumpur, 17 May 2013 – The ROASTERS Chicken Run (RCR) by Kenny Rogers ROASTERS (KRR) is back for the ninth consecutive year. This time around, it will be held at Sunway Lagoon on 23rd June 2013 from 7:00am onwards.

For every participant that signs up for the event, KRR will contribute RM13 towards the Little Yellow Flower Foundation, a charitable body which offers underprivileged children the opportunity for a better future through love, happiness, good nutrition and a better education.

“The ROASTERS Chicken Run has seen tremendous support from the public since its inception. In year 2012, we managed to raised a total of RM60,000.00 for the needy. In line with the I Love campaign, we’re really looking forward to gather generous Malaysians to raise a significant amount in support for this year’s run. Besides the run is also a great way for friends and family to have fun while helping the underprivileged,” said Esther Woo, Deputy General Manger of Berjaya Roasters (M) Sdn Bhd.

Participants will run a pre-designated route of 4.8km (for runners aged 13 years and above) or 2.8km (for runners from ages 7 to 12 years) around the Sunway Pyramid area. Unlike conventional runs, participants of the ROASTERS Chicken Run will have to balance an egg on a cone whilst running the route.

The participant will be disqualified from winning the prizes if the egg breaks RCR 2013 will also see the appearance of a special guest – Ms Lee Sinje, the founder of Little Yellow Flower, to flag off the participants to run for charity.

“On behalf of Little Yellow Flower, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to KRR for choosing us as the beneficiary for the second consecutive year. Aside from the funds, KRR has also graciously provided KRR wholesome meals once every two months to the children. This initiative will be more successful with participation from the public and I hope to see as many people as possible on 23 June 2013!” urged Lee Sinje, the founder of Little Yellow Flower.

Public can sign up at any KRR restaurant before 16 June 2013. Entry fee for the run is RM62 for adults and RM57 for children aged 7 to 12 years. Groups of 10 will be offered a lower price of RM60 (adults) and RM55 (children). All registered participants will be provided freebies worth more than RM100 which include an exclusive ROASTERS Chicken Run T-Shirt, a Kenny’s Quarter Meal voucher, a Sunway Lagoon entrance ticket and a Goody Bag.

Vietnam Mountain Marathon 2013 @ Sapa, Vietnam

Vietnam Mountain Marathon 2013 is the result of a lifelong love of running and a fascination with Vietnam. The small dirt roads and narrow trails will take you through the beautiful mountain ranges of Hoang Lien National Park and valleys that are usually closed territory to all but the few people living there.

Be prepared for an extraordinary adventure, to run through the rice fields and speed through breath-taking valleys, to cross bridges of bamboo, bypass water buffalos, mountain pigs and cheering local children.

What? Vietnam Mountain Marathon 2013
Where? Sapa, Vietnam
How far? 21km, 42km or +65km in a spectacular mountain region of north Vietnam.

In general

The trails – with cumulative positive vertical meters ranging from around 1.100 (21 K) to 3.000 meters (+65 K) – will be on a marked route, tagged at crucial navigational points. Water and fruit will be available at aid stations every 10-15km. Runners doing the marathon or the ultra-distance must bring their own additional energy bars, gel or personal food and other mandatory equipment (see equipment). For Full or Ultra Marathon it cannot be your first run of this distance, given the altitude and general hard conditions.

Very strong sun or heavy rain is always a possibility in the mountains. Any participation in this unique event is completely at your own risk and you have to sign on that before start.

After the race you will enjoy a good meal around a big bonfire and share your running experiences, the mountains and the twinkling stars above. Bring your family, your friends or join this unique event on your own. You don’t have to be a fast runner, but you better be a tough one looking for a unique adventure or why not enjoy a long day of great hike & run of 21km.
