Lung cancer is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Malaysia and worldwide. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer death after breast cancer, accounting for about one out of five malignancies in men and one out of nine in women. Those who smoke have a risk of developing lung cancer that is 10 to 17 times higher than that of non-smokers. Smoking has been shown to be the main risk factor for lung cancer. The risk increases with the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the number of years the person has smoked. The risk of lung cancer for non-smokers who are exposed to smoke in the environment (known as second-hand, passive or involuntary smoking), is as much as 30 percent higher than that of those who are not. Basically, everyone is succumb to lung cancer, even for young women and non-smoker.

In spite of the alarming statistics, public awareness of the symptoms, signs and nature of lung cancer was found to be poor. This has been identified as a cause of late presentation of the disease at an inoperable stage in many patients, and also a delay in diagnosis. Thus, Lung Cancer Awarenss Charity Run 2018 with the theme of Love Lung , Love Life is a charity drive organized by EMPOWERED-The Cancer Advocacy Society of Malaysia, with the objectives

1) To raise awareness about the many types of lung cancer, recent evolution in diagnostics, therapeutics and prevention.

2)To work in collaboration with governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote smoke-free public and workplaces.

3)To encourage and educate the public to achieve healthy lungs and active lifestyles.

4)To raise sufficient funds to allow ongoing implementation of our grassroot cancer screening and treatment projects, so as to allow an increasing number of underprivileged communities throughout Malaysia to have their basic right to fight against cancer.
