Press Release: SHILLS & BCWA’a “PINK LOVE” Charity Run

Kuala Lumpur, September 15 – Calling all runners, walkers & health enthusiasts! SHILLS Beauty Sdn Bhd and Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) are co-jointly organizing a “Pink Love Charity Run” aimed at creating public awareness and support on breast cancer cause.

In addition, the run also aims to promote consciousness of an active and healthy lifestyle in support of global health events in October / November such as Breast Cancer Awareness Week, Pink October, World Mental Health Week, World Diabetes Day etc.

SHILLS & BCWA’ “Pink Love” Charity Run which trails 5KM run will be held on Sunday, 23 November 2014 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa. The event starts 7:30am

All profits generated from this fund-raising event is 100% donated to BCWA. Registration is RM40 each person. Each participant will be given a runners’ pack. Those interested to take part in this run can call 03-80620743/6 or visit http://www.myraceonline.com/ for info and registration.

The run expects 1,000 participants comprising both breast cancer patients and the public.

SHILLS Executive Director, Lee Joyce enthused: “SHILLS started a CSR partnership with BCWA since last year with product and cash sponsorships. This year, we took on a broader, more extensive and interactive approach to build a healthier community whilst cultivating caring hearts. The Pink Love care run is aimed at supporting BCWA’s funds for various educational and community endeavours.

“SHILLS would like to bring home the message anyone or everyone should take physical exercise seriously as a pre-emption of mental or physical ailments.

“The beauty about this run is that all participants will walk or run in a pair (with a spouse, family or a friend). Each participant will be tied to the other participant with a pink ribbon. Both have to reach the finishing line together with the ribbon intact,” Joyce explained.

This “ribbon-tying” harbours a meaningful message. Besides representing breast cancer, it’s important to have someone by your side to encourage, support and walk through life’s race or journey, be it for anyone or ill-stricken patients.

The ribbon does not allow one to walk / run too fast slow. Both have to be mindful of each other’s pace to help each other along the way. ‘This sends out the message of being sensitive to needs of others and supporting each other,” quipped Joyce.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting Malaysian women as well as the commonest cancer in women amongst all races between 2003 - 2005. Breast cancer formed 31.1% of newly diagnosed cancer cases during the same period.

According to the National Cancer Institute in US, the relationship between physical activity and breast cancer incidence has been extensively studied, with over 60 studies published in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Most studies indicate that physically active women have a lower risk of developing breast cancer than inactive women.

Most evidence suggests that physical activity reduces breast cancer risk in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Although a lifetime of regular, vigorous activity is thought to be of greatest benefit, women who increase their physical activity after menopause may also experience a reduced risk compared with inactive women.

A number of studies also suggest that the effect of physical activity may be different across levels of BMI, with the greatest benefit seen in women in the normal weight range (generally a BMI under 25 kg/m-squared) in some studies. Existing evidence shows a decreasing risk of breast cancer as the frequency and duration of physical activity increase. Most studies suggest that 30 to 60 minutes per day of moderate- to high-intensity physical activity is associated with a reduction in breast cancer risk.

At the start of the run in St. John's Newfoundland, he dipped his leg into the Atlantic, and then took two gallons of ocean water, one gallon he intended to dump into the Pacific at Vancouver Stanley Park when he reached there.

The other gallon he wanted to keep as a souvenir. Terry never reached the Pacific Ocean; he was forced to stop the run on September 1, 1980 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Find out more about Terry Fox HERE.

Nike We Run KL is ON! We Run 2014 Will Reach More Than 140,000 Runners in 14 Races Around the World

What does it take to achieve a personal best? Runners need the right equipment, the right training plan and the right motivation. From August until February, Nike's We Run Race Series will reach more than 140,000 runners in 14 races around the world. These athletes will be supported with the latest footwear and apparel innovations to take their race goals to the next level, including the new light, responsive and supportive Nike Air Zoom Structure 18 as well as the latest performance Dri-FIT Knit tops. And the Nike+ Running app will provide athletes everywhere with the motivation, inspiration and coaching they need to train for races no matter the distance.

"The modern-day running boom continues to accelerate and it's a new generation of athletes who are leading the pack," said Adam Roth, Vice President, Brand Marketing, Global Running. "These runners are young and fast, and they embrace running not only as their sport, but as an integral part of their lives."

"The We Run series isn't just another event," Roth continued. "These experiences bridge the physical with the digital through Nike+ to provide runners the opportunity to push their limits, reach their personal best and connect with a passionate community of athletes not only in the city of their race, but around the world."

GLOBAL RACES TO INSPIRE
Now in their sixth year, Nike’s We Run races range in distance from 7K to a full marathon and reflect the particular enthusiasm of each city. From Seoul to Soweto, Mexico City to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur to Guatemala, runners will be moved to action through a series of unique experiences. Tailored to the individual city, the We Run races bring together athletes and local musicians and build on the aesthetic of each landscape through carefully designed run courses.

In today’s fast-paced world, runners demand more than just a typical 10K. They expect new challenges that will push their boundaries and test their limits. They want to celebrate their milestones with their friends and running communities.

This season's Nike's We Run race highlights will include a variety of different course distances to challenge athletes. For the first time, several of the race cities, including Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and Mexico City will be 21K races. Nike is also connecting the running community with a series of pre-race training runs organized through their local Nike+ run clubs.

GET READY FOR PERSONAL BEST
In addition to footwear and apparel, Nike helps runners prepare for race day through the more than 30 million strong Nike+ community who have together logged over 1.7 billion kilometers. Collectively, this season's We Run athletes will clock approximately 1.5 million kilometers—the equivalent of running the equator 39 times.

The Nike+ ecosystem elevates training as an integral part of your race day preparation. Elite runners know that pushing yourself in training is what drives success in actual races.

“The races are the easy part and they are obviously a lot of fun,” said Galen Rupp, American world record holder in the 10,000 meters and the indoor 3000 meters. “It definitely comes down to a lot of the hard work that we put in before and when we step on the line we’re ready to go and we know that we are in great shape and there is not an ounce of doubt in us when we step on the line that we are physically ready to go.”

The new Nike+ running app for iPhone and Android acts as a personal best trainer, with features including Nike+ coach, which enables runners to run further, faster and smarter with customized training plans and distance goals.

For runners looking to enhance their race build up, Nike offers the N+TC app, a full-body training digital tool that caters to every level of fitness.

GEAR UP WITH INNOVATIONS
Today's young and fast runners need gear that will take them where they want to go. This year that includes the Nike Zoom Air running collection, specifically engineered for speed and delivering Nike’s fastest, most responsive Nike Air cushioning. This race season, runners can pick from four different Nike Zoom Air shoes, including the new Nike Air Zoom Structure 18.

The Nike Air Zoom Structure 18 is a stability running shoe specifically designed for everyday training. The Structure delivers a smooth ride through the combination of upper stability features such as Dynamic Fit technology working together with the outsole, which includes a lateral crash rail and a Dynamic Support stability system made up of foam with three different levels of density. The new contoured last provides added toe spring and combines with Zoom Air cushioning to give the snappy, quick-off-the-ground feel.

“We designed the Zoom Air collection to be a revolution in speed,” said Mark Miner, Senior Footwear Designer, Nike Running. “Whether they’re racing or training, athletes repeatedly ask for Zoom Air because they love that fast, snappy, responsive ride and the energy return they get from it.”

Nike Air Zoom Structure 18 is available on Nike.com starting Sept 25.

Nike’s cool, comfortable apparel products help keep athletes focused on the run. They assist the body’s natural ability to stay at an optimal temperature when running in a variety of conditions. Developed with body-led, data-informed insights, Dri-FIT Breeze for women and Dri-FIT Touch for men are running tops that are cut to increase air circulation and are built with ultra-lightweight, sweat-wicking Dri-FIT fabric to help runners stay cool on hot weather runs.

Dri-FIT Touch is available at Nike stores and Nike.com starting Oct 1.

Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 has a new route for your PB?

For the second time in six years, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 will have a new route to test runners’ endurance and skills on more elevated roads. We get to “ride” the 42km in a brand new HopOn-HopOff bus as part of the media tour of the new route which was held on 6 September. (Insert excited squeal here)

We started at Dataran Merdeka where participants will start and finish as usual. However, the new route will take you guys along the Duta-Ulu Klang Highway (DUKE) and the Ampang-KL Elevated Highway (AKLEH) instead of the previous years when you ran mainly on city roads.

The media tour was hosted by Rainer Biemans (left), Director of Dirigo Events, event owner and organiser of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon while live commentary was provided by coach Mark Williams.

“Our first consideration is always the safety of our runners. When designing the routes, we looked into various ways of leading runners onto roads that presented the least traffic hazards.”

“Running on elevated highways means that runners get to enjoy the rare experience of a bird’s eye view of the city skyline plus traffic is more manageable and we are optimistic that the runners will enjoy the experience,” he said.

He also said special attention was paid to the Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman turns, so collisions and congestion between Full Marathon and Half Marathon runners returning and 10km, 5km runners heading to their start points could be avoided this year.

“We have grown from 33,800 last year to 35,200 as of Sept 1, 2014 and we are confident the new route with the highways, will be able to take on that number during the event.

“As the event organiser, our efforts have always been channelled towards making the race better and for our runners to constantly experience something new. I believe we have achieved this once again with the new route,” Biemans said.

FYI, the highways DUKE and AKLEH will be closed for traffic on the event morning. So, you get to run like a king without getting honked at by impatient drivers. Heheh! From what we saw, it will be a scenic route as well where you will pass by majestic landmarks such as the Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers, KTMB Station Kuala Lumpur, the National Monument and the Kuala Lumpur High Court to name a few.

The Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) will be taking centre stage this year. Runners will get to see these iconic towers from near, far and from different sides as well.

According the organisers, numerous precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the runners’ safety on Race Day. These include:

• Engagement of 400 traffic police and DBKL enforcement officers to ensure a traffic-free running route and pre-race road closures
• Public conveniences such as 350 toilets, surau facilities and 28 water stations on the route as well as Dataran Merdeka
• 450 medical personnel both on the route as well as Dataran Merdeka
• 350 race officials both on the route as well as the start and finish areas
• Public transportation services from as early as 3am

The media tour concluded at where we started earlier, Dataran Merdeka. Thank you Dirigo for organizing the media tour. It was awesome to see the new route and we are sure the runners will have a blast blazing through the new SCKLM route this year!

And thank you for the cute little SCKLM T-shape towel as proudly shown by Ms. Julie Wong of Run in Diversity blog.

Before the media tour, a bunch of 8 runners were given the opportunity to test run the full 42.195km of the new SCKLM route before anyone else. They started off at 4:30 am in the morning, exactly the start time of SCKLM this year.

The majority is very excited with the new route. We caught up with some of them to give you some of their thoughts on the new course.

Photo clock wise from top left

Kelvin Wan
“This will be my third SCKLM full marathon. The route is well planned for the runners with the two highways closed from traffic. Do not start too fast. Pace yourself and enjoy the KL view”.

Gus Ghani
“The new route is much better than the old one as we will be running closed elevated highways. It was quite windy in the morning. The last five km can be quite challenging. Do at least a 30km run before the event day.”

Joe Liew
“The route is easy and interesting as we get to run on the other side of the city. Just go have fun and enjoy the scenery”

Chan Ming Wai
“I think runners will be able to achieve their personal best on this route. It is not too tough and the elevated highways are free from cars.”

According to Coach Mark Williams, a brand new SCKLM record is possible as the route has been modified from previous years’ to be runner-friendly with a lot of relatively flat terrain.

A summary of SCKLM 2014 Full Marathon route.
Start at Dataran Merdeka heading towards Jalan Raja Laut and run along Jalan Sultan Ismail – Jalan Ampang – KLCC – Jln P.Ramlee – Jln Raja Chulan – Jln Tun Razak – Jln Ampang – Jln Jelatek. Begin the 9.5km in front of Balai Bomba Jelatek into AKLEH. Do a U-turn and enter MRR2 km 19, after running about 2km in MRR2, get into DUKE. Run on DUKE until the exit at Jln Kuching at km 31. Continue on Jalan Kuching for another 3km before entering Jln Langgak Tunku. Pass by Bank Negara, Jln Parlimen, Padang Merbok/Tugu Negara before going into Jln Damansara – in front of Muzium Negara, km 40.5. Run pass the majestic KTM station and Masjid Negara before ending at Dataran Merdeka.

Honda Half Marathon runners will get to enjoy the scenic KL from AKLEH only while the MISC 10km runners will get to see KL without having to run on elevated highways.

Back for the sixth year, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon is scheduled to take place on 12 October 2014. The marathon aims to grow to 35,000 total participants, ranging from elite professionals to first-time amateurs. A truly international event, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon boasts participants from all over Malaysia and over 48 countries. The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 continues as Malaysia’s flagship running event with top runners competing for a total of USD 116,740 prize money.

Press Release: Inov-8 Pacesetters 3030 Run 2014

Wan Yew Leong, President of Pacesetters Athletic Club (left) and Robert Lu, President of Key Power International (right)

Kuala Lumpur, 5 September 2014 – The INOV-8 Pacesetters 3030 Run 2014 was officially launched today at the Garden Mid-Valley Mall, Kuala Lumpur. Organised by Pacesetters Athletic Club (PAC) with title sponsor INOV-8, the event was officiated by Mr. Robert Lu, the President of Key Power International and Mr. Wan Yew Leong, the President of Pacesetters Athletic Club.

With all 8 categories opened for registration since 16 July 2014, the event has garnered good response from runners. The organisers targeted to get 3,000 runners over the 3 distances - 30km, 20km and 10km.

Wan Yew Leong said that “PAC’s vision and aspiration is to be the leading running club in the country and region. To achieve this, we will organise three events that aim to be “best in class” in the region. The INOV-8 Pacesetters 3030 Run 2014 is the first of these three events. 2014 is the 30th anniversary of the founding of the club and having a 30km run to celebrate this special occasion would be really memorable. There are 10 marathons and several more half marathons in Malaysia, but there are no 30km events. This is a boutique event and provides an opportunity for those wanting to test their readiness for the full marathon. For seasoned marathon runners, this is a long run that is essential for their marathon preparation”

INOV-8 Pacesetters 3030 Run 2014 is to be flagged off at Padang Merbok. Runners will get to experience some of the finest run routes in Kuala Lumpur, running through leafy Kenny Hills and Sri Hartamas. They will be well catered to, with 13, 8 and 3 drink stations on the 30km, 20km and 10km routes respectively.

“As a running club, we encourage our members to go natural in their diet as we feel the best fuel the body can get is from natural sources, therefore we aim offer fruit-themed refreshments. We will serve bananas before, during and after the run. In addition, water melons, oranges & apples will also be provided as post run snacks” Wan added.

“Our club’s tagline, ‘Setting the Pace Together’ will be printed on the finisher’s shirts. The INOV-8 Pacesetters 3030 Run originated from a 30km training run organized by runners for runners many years ago. We hope this event will inspire other running clubs in the country to have their own events in their towns. We have a vision of a circuit of runs organized by runners for runners across the country. PAC will provide the lead in co-ordinating a series of runs by running clubs in 2015.” concluded Wan.

Robert Lu said, “The Ministry of Youth and Sports’ vision is to champion the empowerment of a superior youth and sports development and to inculcate sports culture within the society by year 2015. Our focuses include Exposure and Opportunities for confidence building; Engagement and Activism for community development and Support and Engage, to the youth of Malaysia.

This is our sixth 30km event and it is made possible by title sponsor INOV-8 in partnership with event owner and organiser, Pacesetters Athletic Club. Garmin is the official fitness watch and Running Malaysia is the media partner of the event.

Runwitme Says: The highlight of the CKRUN2014 is that it would be graced by the legendary Mr Fauja Singh aka The Turbaned Tornado and also the oldest marathoner in the world at 103 years old. Two years ago, Mr Singh was in KL for the CKRUN2012 and he has agreed to come to Malaysia once again for this year's run organised by our team.

In addition, after the run, there will be a multicultural music jamming session. There is more actually and another key aspect is that this run would promote the concept of Free Kitchen (purely vegetarian), where we embody the concept of serving food to all.

Press Release: Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 To Include ‘Mr Monty’ The Monitor Lizard!

Kuala Lumpur, 2 September 2014 – The Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 will experience another highlight this year with the presence of ‘Mr Monty’, a fictional character in a children’s book by Gail Featherstone, wife of the former British High Commissioner, the late Simon Featherstone. Donning a 6ft. monitor lizard suit, ‘Mr Monty’ is set to take on the 5km Fun Run category on Race Day, 12th October 2014.

Gloria Ng, Director of Dirigo Events, owner and event organiser of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2014 said:

“Over the years, we have witnessed a number of highlights including runners in costumes. It is no easy feat, especially in the Malaysian weather coupled with the weight of the costume! As the Marathon organisers, we applaud the determination and creativity of the runners. These efforts are a good reflection of our tagline this year- Committed. Confident. Courageous.”

“Furthermore, giving back to society has always been our cause under the Run For A Reason programme. This is the second consecutive year we have Hospis Malaysia as our charity partner and we truly appreciate the organisation’s proactivity in making the Marathon more meaningful.”

Under Run For A Reason, runners who pledge to Hospis Malaysia will raise funds from the public. The funds raised by Hospis Malaysia under Run For A Reason will be channelled into patient services and training in palliative care. Proceeds from the sales of the children’s book ‘Mr Monty’s Treat’, also go to Hospis Malaysia.

“We are indeed thankful for the contributions by Standard Chartered KL Marathon and the British High Commission. Through their efforts, we are confident that more awareness can be focused on palliative care,” said Hospis Malaysia General Manager, Tham Su Ming.

Gail Featherstone, author of the book added, "It is good to see that ‘Mr Monty’ is keeping up the fitness campaign which he started by climbing Mount Kinabalu in May with his friends from the British High Commission. I wish him all the best for this latest challenge and his ongoing efforts to publicise the work of hospice care in general and children's palliative care in particular. Go ‘Mr Monty’!"

This year will be Standard Chartered KL Marathon’s sixth installation. Hospis Malaysia is a returning charity partner for the second year. Apart from it, other charity partners under the Run For A Reason programme include the Standard Chartered Foundation, The National Autism Society of Malaysia and the Malaysia Nature Society.
