Discover the Charm of Rumah Atap Kuning: A Cultural and Culinary Experience

If you've ever participated in the Larian Hari Keputeraan Sultan Nazrin Shah and opted for the 15km category, chances are you've stumbled upon a hidden gem: Rumah Atap Kuning. This charming traditional Malay house, nestled amidst picturesque paddy fields, offers a nostalgic escape into the past.

Rumah Atap Kuning, or "Yellow Roof House," is a stunning example of traditional Malay architecture. Its elevated structure, a common feature in Malay homes, serves a practical purpose: protecting the house from floods and promoting better ventilation. The wooden walls, ornate windows, and the vibrant yellow roof are hallmarks of Malay architectural brilliance.

As you step into Rumah Atap Kuning, you're transported back in time. The presence of a trishaw and an old bicycle adds to the nostalgic appeal, inviting visitors to capture timeless moments.

The house exudes a sense of tranquility. The surrounding paddy fields, fishpond, and the sight of free-roaming turkeys, ducks and geese create a peaceful ambiance. The airy interior is equally charming, with traditional kampung-style decor and vintage furniture.

In addition to its historical and cultural significance, Rumah Atap Kuning operates as a eatery, offering a delightful culinary experience. They serve a variety of traditional Malay dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

The staff look straight out of a P. Ramlee movie, in their traditional outfits.

We indulged in the Set Talam Nostalgia, a feast served on a large tray, reminiscent of childhood meals. The dishes, including Masak Lemak Jantung Pisang Daging, Ikan Lampam Sungai Perak Goreng, and various other delicacies, were simply divine. The food was served on vintage plates, adding to the nostalgic charm of the experience.

To complete the meal, we were treated to red agar-agar and tapai, traditional Malay desserts. Water was served in Labu Sayong, a traditional Malay water container which is very popular in Perak.

Agar-agar merah - a typical Malay dessert in the olden days.

The meal was served on the floor, a traditional Malay dining style.

Smaller groups can opt for the idyllic outdoor dining experience in the dangau, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Enjoy a cup of Kopi O or Teh Tarik from the drink station.
