The transition from the concrete hum of Kuala Lumpur to the salt-tinged air of the coast took a mere 80 minutes. I had hitched a ride with a friend, Juh and as we swapped the city skyline for the open road, the journey felt like a complete reset. We soon pulled into the newly opened Raia Beach Resort Port Dickson. As the brand’s first foray into beachfront properties, the resort claims a prime piece of real estate along Teluk Kemang Beach. It sits so close to the shoreline that the sound of the tide is a constant, subtle companion, positioning it as an effortless escape for city dwellers.

Stepping into Raia Beach Resort feels less like checking into a hotel and more like finding a quiet, sun-drenched sanctuary right on the edge of the Teluk Kemang shore. There’s a genuine, lived-in warmth to the place that the recent refurbishments haven't polished away—it just feels fresh and ready for new memories. 

The upgraded swimming pool, with sections for both adults and children, is another thoughtful touch, complemented by open recreational spaces perfect for group activities or small celebrations.

The heart of the resort is undoubtedly the upgraded pool, a welcoming spot where kids can splash safely while the adults finally find a moment to breathe. It’s that rare kind of seaside escape where you can wander barefoot from your room to the pool, and then straight onto the sand, making the whole stay feel like one long, effortless afternoon by the sea.

We arrived ahead of schedule, half-expecting a wait, but were met with a seamless early check-in. My Superior Twin room served as a clean, refurbished sanctuary—simple in its layout but comfortable in its execution, providing exactly what one needs for a coastal retreat. Once settled, the morning took a formal turn with the resort's official launch.

The opening ceremony of Raia Beach Resort Port Dickson was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Mohd Shukri bin Hussin, Chairman of Urusharta Jamaah Sdn Bhd, together with YBhg. Dato’ Othman bin Semail, Chairman of UJ Hotels & Resorts Management Services Sdn Bhd, and representatives from Koperasi Tunas Muda Sungai Ara Berhad, the property owner.

The ceremony, officiated by YBhg. Dato' Mohd Shukri bin Hussin and YBhg. Dato' Othman bin Semail, wasn't just about ribbon-cutting; it was a statement of intent. Their addresses painted a picture of Raia Hotels’ strategic growth, moving beyond their established city and convention hubs into the leisure segment. The collaboration with Koperasi Tunas Muda Sungai Ara Berhad added a layer of community-driven purpose to the project, aiming to further unlock the tourism potential of this classic Malaysian destination.

Celebrations in Malaysia are rarely complete without a culinary showcase, and lunch was no exception. The spread felt like a festive Raya open house, heavy with the aroma of satay and roast lamb. However, it was the local Negeri Sembilan staples that stole the show. I found myself gravitating toward the masak lemak cili api, though the ultimate comfort came in a bowl of rich, velvety Mi Rebus that stood out as the personal highlight of the afternoon.

Celebrations in Malaysia always come with a feast — satay and roast lamb filling the air with aroma.

From roast lamb to local staples, lunch was a true culinary showcase of Malaysian hospitality.

Coastal Wandering and Town Charm

Between the official itinerary and the afternoon’s excursions, I took a moment to pace out the property. The pool area is clearly the heart of the resort, thoughtfully split for adults and children, surrounded by landscaped spaces that offer a sense of quietude. The real luxury, however, is the direct beach access. Stepping off the resort grounds and onto the sands of Teluk Kemang is a breeze, making it dangerously easy to lose track of time by the water.

The highlight is undoubtedly the direct beach access. Guests can stroll barefoot onto the sand for sunrise walks or casual evening gatherings. 

The heat of the afternoon called for a local remedy, so I wandered across the main road to sample the PD Famous Cendol. Under the uncompromising Malaysian sun, that bowl of shaved ice, palm sugar, and coconut milk was more than just a snack—it was a necessity.

By 3:00 PM, our exploration moved further afield to the Taman Eko-Rimba Tanjung Tuan. This forest reserve straddles the border of Negeri Sembilan and Melaka and houses the historic Cape Rachado Lighthouse. Standing before Malaysia’s oldest lighthouse, a structure dating back to Portuguese rule, provides a striking perspective of the Straits of Malacca. We made the climb just in time to soak in the views before the sky bruised over with rain clouds, prompting a hurried but scenic descent.

The rest of the afternoon was a blend of modern and traditional PD. We admired the vibrant PD Art Murals that have injected a fresh energy into the town’s streets before heading to the PD Waterfront. It’s a polished promenade that feels distinctively contemporary. Over lattes at Zus Coffee, I watched the sea, though I couldn't resist a quick detour to Inside Scoop for a hit of durian ice cream—a flavor that always feels like the right choice when you're exploring the coast.

Poolside Evening and Morning Discoveries

Evening at Raia took on a slower pace. After catching up on some editorial work, I headed to the poolside for a BBQ dinner. The air was filled with the smoke of grilled meats, prawns, and chicken wings, balanced by hearty sides of mushroom soup and fried macaroni. Later, a nighttime stroll along the beach revealed a different side of Teluk Kemang; the shore was well-lit and vibrant, dotted with families enjoying their own cookouts under the stars.

The following morning began with a classic Malaysian breakfast at the Coffee House—a spread of nasi lemak, mi goreng, and tom yum bihun that provided the perfect fuel for a morning run. 

I headed out along the beach, and about a kilometer down the road from the resort, I stumbled upon a genuine hidden gem: the PD Ornamental Fish Centre. Entry is free, but the value is immense. I spent an hour lost among the tanks of vibrant marine life and even caught sight of a sea turtle, a quiet and unexpected highlight that added a layer of discovery to the trip.

Before heading back to KL, I made a final stop at Kedai Makan Kak Long. Recommended by the Hotel Manager, the crowd at this local eatery was all the proof I needed of its quality. It was the perfect bookend to a trip defined by local flavours.

Its tagline, “Hotel Untuk Semua,” feels earned—it’s an accessible, unpretentious, and warmly Malaysian base that bridges the gap between simple seaside relaxation and the cultural depth of the town. For a 2D1N getaway, it’s a reminder that sometimes the best escapes are the ones right in our backyard.
