Chasing the Final Dawn: Hiking Khao Khuha Mountain Near Hat Yai

Golden light, a final gleam,
A year departs, a fading dream.
But hope remains, a promise bright,
For dawn anew, with morning light.

These lines perfectly captured the essence of my New Year's Eve adventure: witnessing the last sunrise of 2024 from the summit of Khao Khuha Mountain near Hat Yai, Thailand.

Enjoying the last sunrise in 2024.

Located about 30 kilometers north of Hat Yai in Rattaphum, Khao Khuha Mountain offers a rewarding hike with breathtaking views. The trail, while relatively easy, requires a moderate level of fitness and proper footwear.

Caught this view halfway of the climb.

Our Journey Begins (and Almost Ends in Darkness!)

We left our hotel around 5:00 AM, eager to reach the trailhead before the sun. However, our excitement quickly turned to mild panic when we realized our guide had forgotten to remind us to bring headlamps! Armed with only the feeble light of our phone torches, we cautiously ascended the trail.

Luckily, we weren't alone. A few friendly dogs joined us on the hike, remaining remarkably quiet and calm throughout the ascent. Their presence added an unexpected touch of tranquility to our journey, keeping us company as we made our way up the mountain.

Memories made in Hat Yai's magical landscape.

A Hidden Gem Revealed

Khuha Mountain, a former marble quarry, is a relatively undiscovered gem, especially among foreign tourists. The lack of crowds added to the tranquility of the experience. The hike itself is a short but enjoyable 20-30 minute climb, rewarding you with panoramic views of rice fields, pine forests, and the distant city of Hat Yai.

Hello sunshine!

A Sunrise to Remember

Standing on the summit as the first rays of dawn painted the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple was truly magical. The stillness of the morning, broken only by the gentle rustle of leaves and the chirping of birds, created an atmosphere of serenity.

As the sun climbed higher, casting a golden glow over the landscape, I reflected on the year that was – its challenges, its triumphs, and the lessons learned. The sunrise symbolized a new beginning, a fresh start filled with hope and possibility.
