Lunch on a Boat in Pattani: A Unique Baharom Cultural Experience

Pattani, a historic port city in southern Thailand, boasts a rich history dating back over 500 years. Influenced by traders from across the globe, including Arabs, Persians, and Europeans, Pattani offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Welcome to Barahom Barzaar

Our adventure began in Barahom, a charming seaside village nestled, not far from the famous Krue Se Mosque. This community-based tourism initiative provides visitors with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture. We embarked on a longtail boat ride, cruising through the serene mangrove forest and marveling at the picturesque fishing villages along the way.

Our beautifully decorated longtail boat.

Cruising through the peaceful mangrove forest, we admired the charming fishing villages that dotted our journey.

The afternoon heat was intense, but the tour operator thoughtfully provided umbrellas, which offered some relief from the scorching sun.

The highlight of our journey was undoubtedly the lunch. A traditional Baharom feast called "Nasi Hidang Kampung" was served on board. This delectable spread included fragrant rice, deep-fried fish, spicy herbs in coconut milk, yellow fish soup, and a flavorful fermented seafood (budu) dip. To top it off, we enjoyed a refreshing tapioca dessert. Note: The food served is halal, prepared by the Muslim operator.

A Taste of Tradition: Nasi Hidang Kampung on a Serene Boat Ride

The rice, served on banana leaves, was a feast for the senses. We savoured every bite, using our hands in the traditional local way. The flavours were exquisite, a symphony of spices and local fresh ingredients. To quench our thirst, we enjoyed ice-cold sweet tea. The combination of delicious food and the relaxing boat ride left us feeling pleasantly sleepy on our return journey.

OMG! This photo makes me salivate! :)

Photos were a must before we could enjoy the feast.

The water was super calm, so we could eat without worrying about the boat rocking too much.

The boat comfortably accommodated 8 adults. There were only 7 of us.

Fingers licking good!
