Ringing in the New Year in Hat Yai: A Vibrant Southern Thai Adventure

Hat Yai, a bustling city in southern Thailand, pulsed with a unique energy, a captivating blend of Thai culture, mouthwatering cuisine, and a vibrant nightlife scene. I recently spent a few days in this exciting destination to ring in the New Year and had an unforgettable experience.

I was graciously invited by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), alongside my fellow travel companions, the ever-enthusiastic blogger Dixon Thum and the effortlessly stylish influencer Ramya. We were accompanied by the hardworking Khun Mai from TAT KL to experience the magic of the Hat Yai Countdown 2025 - Happiness Illumination. This itinerary outlines how I celebrated the arrival of 2025 in Hat Yai, a whirlwind of cultural immersion, culinary delights, and breathtaking natural beauty.

Wat Khok Piew, featuring the presence of two mythical naga, intricately intertwined at their tails.

Day 1: Arrival and City Exploration

We touched down at Hat Yai International Airport after a short and surprisingly smooth 50-minute flight from KLIA Terminal 1 on Batik Air. Greeted by the ever-smiling Khun Beau from TAT Hat Yai and our knowledgeable guide, Khun M, we were whisked away in a comfortable Toyota HiAce.

Every step in Hat Yai is a new adventure.

Our adventure commenced with a visit to the serene Wat Khok Piew, a Buddhist temple renowned for its unique architectural features. One of its most captivating elements is the presence of two mythical naga, intricately intertwined at their tails.

Thirsty? We got you covered. :)

Next, we ascended to The Proud Koh Yor, a hilltop restaurant offering breathtaking panoramic views. After a short, scenic lift ride, we were greeted by a stunning vista of rolling hills and the sparkling sea. We indulged in some delectable snacks and refreshing drinks, ensuring our stomachs were happy and our spirits were high for the adventures to come.

The legend surrounding the Golden Mermaid adds to its allure. It's said that a fisherman once saw a mermaid combing her hair on the beach. Startled, she fled into the sea, leaving behind her golden comb. The fisherman waited for her return, but she never reappeared.

Later, we headed to the iconic Samila Beach to witness the legendary Golden Mermaid statue. We snapped some memorable photos, soaking in the festive atmosphere and enjoying the gentle sea breeze.

Unwind in style at the exquisite Buri Sriphu Hotel.

Finally, we checked into our luxurious abode – Buri Sriphu Hotel. Our rooms were spacious, elegantly designed, and even boasted a luxurious bathtub! Pure bliss!

The evening culminated with a feast at Sompon Restaurant, where we embarked on a culinary adventure through the flavours of Southern Thai cuisine. Each dish was a symphony of fresh herbs, fiery chilies, and fragrant spices, a true explosion of taste.

From appetisers to desserts, Thai dishes are a feast for the senses

After dinner, we plunged headfirst into the vibrant atmosphere of Walking Street. A symphony of sights and sounds assaulted my senses: the sizzling of street food stalls, the enticing aromas of exotic spices, the lively chatter of locals and tourists, and the infectious rhythm of live music. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way!

Day 2: New Year's Eve

Khoa Kuha - One of Hat Yai's hidden gems and endless discoveries.

Rise and shine! We were up at the crack of dawn, eager to conquer the Khoa Kuha View Point. Guided by the torch light of our phones, we embarked on a challenging but rewarding hike. Note: Do bring a headlight if you want to visit this place at dawn.

Enjoying the last sunrise in 2024.

Breathing in the beauty of Hat Yai's diverse scenery.

Memories made in Hat Yai's magical landscape.

The view from the summit was simply breathtaking. I stood in awe, gazing out at an endless expanse of emerald green fields, with sporadic houses dotting the landscape like distant dreams. The last sunrise of 2024 was a spectacular display of golden yellows and vibrant oranges, a truly magical sight.

Ama Dim Sum is a must-visit for both locals and tourists looking to enjoy a delightful breakfast or brunch

Back in the city, we indulged in a delightful breakfast of traditional dim sum at Ama Dim Sum

This cosy spot is a local favorite, serving up a mouthwatering selection of freshly made dim sum. From juicy dumplings to assorted fish balls and all your classic dim sum favorites, the choices are endless.

The self-service style lets you pick and choose your own adventure, and watch as your selections are expertly steamed to perfection. With friendly staff and budget-friendly prices, Ama Dim Sum is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious and authentic dim sum experience, whether you're a local or a tourist.

We were fortunate enough to meet the amiable owners of Ama Dim Sum.

After a quick break back at the hotel (I managed to catch some 40 winks), we were ready for lunch again! (We had been eating non-stop!) We headed out to Uncle Tee Fish Noodles.

Uncle Tee Fish Noodles is a beloved local eatery in Hat Yai, Thailand. This isn't just any noodle shop; it's where locals and even celebrities flock for a taste of authentic Thai comfort food. You can see photos of famous faces proudly displayed on the walls, a testament to the restaurant's popularity. Uncle Tee specializes in fresh and flavourful fish noodle dishes.

Next up on our itinerary: Songkhla Old Town!

Sunny skies and cultural delights in Songkhla Old Town

The charming Songkhla Old Town boasts a captivating blend of Chinese and Portuguese architectural influences. We wandered through narrow alleyways, admiring the intricate details of shop houses adorned with ornate balconies and vibrant colors. We stumbled upon hidden cafes, sipping on aromatic Thai coffee, savoring delicate Thai desserts, and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere.

Baan Nakhon Nai Museum of King Rama IX Songkla Old Town

The Nakhon Nai Museum of King Rama IX, located in Songkhla Old Town, is a captivating destination that showcases the history and culture of southern Thailand. Housed within a beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese style building, the museum features a unique collection of artifacts. These include traditional Chinese antiques, sculptures, and exhibits dedicated to the beloved King Rama IX.

Would you try this Thai Raw Egg Yolk Coconut Ice Cream in Songkhla Old Town?

Ong Ice Cream isn't your average ice cream shop! Their coconut milk ice cream has gone viral for a good reason. It's light, refreshing, and perfectly sweet. For a truly local experience, try it with a raw egg yolk and a sprinkle of Milo powder – it's a flavour explosion! Served in cute little jars (which you can keep as a souvenir for a small fee), it's a delicious and affordable treat that's become a must-try for both locals and tourists.

The Thai desserts look almost too beautiful to devour.

Craving a sugar rush? Thong Ngam Cafe in Songkhla is the place to be! This charming spot is a haven for Thai dessert lovers. Get ready to feast on a mouthwatering array of Thai traditional desserts, all freshly made daily.

Hello, Miami?

On our way back, we made a spontaneous detour to "Miami Beach," a stretch of coastline lined with rows of palm trees, creating a surprisingly authentic Miami-esque vibe.

Dive into the creamy richness of Monthong durian.

We couldn't resist the temptation of a nearby durian stall. We indulged in a massive Monthong durian, indulging its sweet and creamy flesh. It was a truly unforgettable experience, despite the pungent aroma!

Experiencing the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, salty, and sour.

We freshened up and then headed to Ar Restaurant for a delicious dinner of authentic Thai-Chinese cuisine. Afterwards, we strolled over to Walking Street and indulged in some sweet treats, like refreshing bird nest soup and the delightful bubur cha cha.

Enjoying the sweet side of Thai street cuisine.

The evening reached its breathtaking finale with the Hat Yai Countdown 2025 - Happiness Illumination event.

Cruising through the mangroves.

Day 3: Day Trip to Pattani

Happy New Year! I started the day with a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, savoring the unique flavours of authentic Thai breakfast.

Then, we embarked on a day trip to the neighboring province of Pattani, a journey of cultural exploration and discovery.

Exploring the historic charm of Masjid Kerisek, where every brick tells a story.

Our first stop was Masjid Kerisek, a historic mosque with a fascinating backstory. Its construction is believed to have started in the 16th century, and it showcases a unique blend of Middle Eastern and European architectural styles. The mosque is famous for its distinctive red brick construction and, most notably, its incomplete dome.

Legend has it that the mosque was cursed by Lim Ko Niao, the sister of a Chinese pirate, preventing the dome from ever being completed. While the truth remains shrouded in mystery, the incomplete dome adds to the mosque's unique charm and historical significance.

Soaking up the sun and smiles in Pattani.

We then ventured to Barahom, a charming seaside village known for its rich history and cultural heritage. The Barahom Barzaar offers unique tourism packages, including handicraft workshops, boat rides, and local culinary experiences.

Unique dining experience with Nasi Hidang and a scenic mangrove boat ride

Our lunch was a truly unique experience. We enjoyed Nasi Hidang, a traditional meal served on banana leaves. The feast included deep-fried fish, spicy herbs in coconut milk, yellow soup with fish, and a spicy fermented seafood dip. We devoured the delicious food while enjoying a scenic boat ride through the mangrove forest.

Lim Ko Niao Shrine - a popular place of worship for both locals and tourists, known for its vibrant atmosphere and the strong belief in the deity's power to grant blessings and protection.

Next, we visited the Lim Ko Niao Shrine, an important religious site dedicated to Chao Mae Lim Ko Niao, a revered local deity. It is a fascinating place to observe local traditions and experience the unique blend of Chinese and Thai cultures that characterize the region.

Letting the creative juices flow...

We also stopped by the Farm Outlet, Café & Souvenirs, where we unleashed our inner artists by decorating our own bucket hats. The outlet also showcased a variety of locally made souvenirs, including intricately designed coin purses, handbags, and key chains.

Proudly showcasing our "work of art" :)

You can't go wrong with this section. This 7-Eleven has a special section with shelves stocked with popular products for tourists.

Before heading back to our hotel, we made a pit stop at the largest 7-Eleven Thanon Pasawang, to stock up on snacks and drinks.

Let the skilled hands of a Thai massage therapist Ease Me into bliss.

To ease our tired bodies, we indulged in a relaxing 2-hour Thai massage at the Ease Me Thai Massage parlour, experiencing the blissful tranquility of traditional Thai massage techniques.

Simple yet satisfying meal @ Nai Yao Eatery Hat Yai

Hungry after our massage, we opted for a comforting bowl of rice porridge at the Nai Yao Eatery. The porridge was accompanied by an array of delicious side dishes like steamed fish, egg with pickled radish, braised duck, and spicy clams.

What a day! Exhausted but incredibly satisfied, we started packing our bags, preparing for our departure the next day.

Day 4: Departure

After a relaxed breakfast at the hotel, it was time to say goodbye. We checked out and headed to the airport.

Savouring the sights, sounds, and flavors of Hat Yai in Kim Yong Market.

Before departing, we ventured into the bustling Kim Yong Market, a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and aromas. We navigated through the maze of stalls, overflowing with colorful textiles, exotic spices, and delectable local delicacies.

It's souvenir presentation time!

We met with Khun Nongyao Kirundon, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (Hat Yai), at Nescafe Street Café, where she presented us with a thoughtful souvenir—an Amazing Thailand T-Shirt—before bidding us goodbye.

I promise to wear the Amazing Thailand T-shirt on the trip, if I ever get invited again by the TAT. :)

Before flying out, I had to grab one last taste of Thailand at Hat Yai airport. I treated myself to a delicious plate of Pad Thai from Black Canyon Cafe. Savouring every bite, I knew I'd cherish the memories of this amazing trip forever.

Pad Thai is a beloved Thai street food dish featuring stir-fried rice noodles with tofu or shrimp, bean sprouts, scrambled eggs, and chopped peanuts in a tangy, sweet-sour sauce. Garnished with lime and chili flakes, it's a perfect balance of salty, sweet, sour, and spicy flavors.

Hat Yai, with its unique blend of Thai culture, delicious food, and warm hospitality, has left an indelible mark on my heart. This vibrant city is a treasure trove of experiences, just a short flight away from Kuala Lumpur. I know I'll be back to explore more of this captivating corner of Thailand soon.

Happy New Year 2025!
